From what I recall, users who got multiple warnings didn’t learn from their mistakes and eventually broke the camel’s back.
We must be careful not to “bait” him into stupid, self-destructive hijacks and moronic takes on history.
I have faith he can do it on his own.
I would hope that moderation would discipline explicit baiting as a form of trolling. And seriously if he needs to be baited then he doesn’t need to be banned.
If he really “cannot learn” he will crack through the ice without any pushes.
Does that mean avoidance of any topics that might tend to “trigger” DD? Like WWI, WWII, Joe Biden etc.?
We shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells around the geek.
The thing I find so maddening about his conduct in, among others, the 2028 Democratic Presidential thread, is that he just keeps repeating the same stuff over and over and over and never moving the argument forward.
To take one of many examples, you can’t mention Ossoff or Shapiro without him popping up to say “Well, some people say they can’t be elected because they’re Jewish”. He doesn’t explain what he personally thinks of that argument or why, just drops that comment and moves on.
Likewise, any mention of Biden gets the “Biden was a great President” comment. Your opinion of Biden’s Presidency is irrelevant to that thread, the opinion of the general public is relevant. So either argue that all the polls showing people think Biden sucked are wrong, or explain how Democratic candidates should be working to rehabilitate Biden’s image. What he actually does is say something that will, at best, be ignored by everyone else and, at best, start a hijack. There’s no possibility it will lead to the conversation becoming more interesting.
Did you know Joe Biden was actually the aggressor in World War I?
His great-uncle, Arthur Albert Biden drove lorries on the Western Front during WWI. It’s been claimed that he instigated the German invasion by leaning across the border and taunting the enemy about the quality of German beer.
I saw it in a book somewhere.
No. It means intentionally creating something specifically in order to provoke a bannable response.
No eggshells needed but no cheese placed in mousetraps.
And that is a fine reason to only quickly skim his “contributions” … but boy in that thread there is not too much fresh to say right now. How many times has it been repeated that Kelly is great on paper but has no charisma? That Ossoff has charisma. He does it in the most knee jerk repeating things verbatim way, but we are all saying the same stuff over again.
Good point.
(sorry, I couldn’t resist)
And I agree that he is annoying but not anywhere near the point of being ban-worthy in my opinion (though the occasional thread or topic ban might be appropriate).
I already came up with a solution to this that I think is simple, elegant, and fair:
Seeing as he is incapable of engaging in good faith on either subject, it kind of feels like DrD ought to have a topic ban on (a) history and (b) current events. And to be safe, probably also a topic ban on engaging in futurism.
But aside from commenting on past, present, and future events, he should be all clear to participate in discussions as normal.
Another poster expressed some concerns that he might then troll threads on fictional topics, so I will amend the proposed topic ban as follows:
DrDeth should be banned from posting on any subject or in any thread that pertains to matters of past, current, or future facts, or which deals with any kind of fictional or speculative subject.
Apart from that narrowly tailored topic ban, he should be free to contribute to the board as much as any other poster.
No. It means intentionally creating something specifically in order to provoke a bannable response.
Yes, but, the poster that demanded a thread be created and provoked himself to provide bannable responses was . . . DrDeth.
So, self-baiting?
To the extent I pity his ignorance, it’s that he provoked the thread because he legitimately thought he could win the debate. Self-awareness is not one of his strengths
So, self-baiting?
Asking for it. Literally asking for it.
Indeed so. It’s upthread:
I know Im going to regret this but Ill start that stupid fucking debate
Shit, I missed that. I gave some bad advice then.
He really needs to avoid hijacks and insults. There is no more leniency.
@DrDeth, you really need to not backslide.
So, self-baiting?
If no one does it better then what is he?
Don’t make me say it.
He’s a professional baiter.
If no one does it better then what is he?
A cunning linguist.
