My business partner loves iced coffee, but he drinks it black. When he orders it at McD’s he has to go through a whole rigamarole explaining that he wants it just black, no cream, no sweetener, just plain black coffee with ice.
About half the time he gets his drink the way he wants it.
I got an iced coffee from McD’s a couple weeks ago and was totally annoyed. First, it had cream in it. Being a bit of a bitch I asked that I was made one without cream- sorry, I didn’t know that it was the default to put the cream in. So it was remade and then, yes, so sweet it tasted like sugar water. But I’d reached my bitch limit for the day so I just tossed it.
So I thought I’d send a complaint e-mail to McD’s, why not! Their feedback forms were somehow screwed up so I couldn’t select from Mr/Ms/Mrs, so when I clicked submit it said the form was incomplete and could not be submitted. Arrgh.
The commercials are annoying enough, but the grand jest is that their lattes are shit and nothing like what you get at those “pretentious, high-brow” coffee shops.
You mean coming back. There was a Dunkin Donuts in Columbia Heights up until about the year 2000 (I think). It didn’t close–it’s still a donut shop, but just not associated with a chain. I’m not sure what happened.
Here in Japan, the coffee at McD’s is remarkably tasty, and they NEVER add the sugar and cream for you. The McCafe concept has hit here too, but not in my area. However, the local McDonald’s has started selling “McBakery” stuff: Croissants, muffins, cinnamon rolls…I’m kind of afraid to try any of those, actually.
I’ve been told that Japan McDonald’s has higher quality food than American ones these days. I wouldn’t know, I’ve been living here too long. But I’ve got the craving for a McDonalds breakfast, and I’ve got an hour to wait before they switch to the breakfast menu…
The coffee is a rip-off and very poor quality, but I have to say I love, love, LOVE their other cafe-style items. The toasted chicken and avocado focaccia is delicious and inexpensive, and comes packed with tasty bbq chicken and a goodly dollop of garlicky mayonnaise. YUM!
We have it here in Indonesia, but it isn’t quite the same as the OP describes. (Mind you, left to my own devices I would never go within 50 meters of a McDonald’s, but I have a husband and son who adore it, so we make the pilgrimage 3 or 4 times per month).
So, here’s how it works in my neighborhood: you go to McD’s, stand in line, order your food and THEY WILL NOT LET YOU ORDER COFFEE. (I can’t stand carbonated beverages, so always substitute coffee for a soda.)
No, for coffee you now have to go to a separate McCafe counter, where you are supposed to order their stupid pseudo-fancy coffees and they try to sell you pastry at the same time (I assume these pastries are awful, but as I have no intention of trying them, I’ll never be sure).
Whatever you think of a pre-McCafe cup of coffee from McDonald’s, at least it was enough liquid to see you through a meal. But the McCafe “long black” coffee here (the closest the menu comes to just plain coffee) is a few pathetic drops, unless you order the large, in which case it is about the size of an ordinary cup of coffee. And the large costs nearly $2 US - which is laughably expensive for Indonesia.
I used to be somewhat well disposed toward McDonald’s - just because I’m not crazy about it myself doesn’t mean it’s intrinsically evil. Morgan Spurlock is an idiot, and frankly consumers who overindulge are more to blame than McDonald’s, IMHO, for any health problems that result from excess consumption. But this failure to offer a reasonably sized cup of coffee at a decent price without added inconvenience is just dumb.
They brought those out again a few years ago when Shrek 3 came out. They were great, if you could get past the fact that you were drinking something that looked exactly like strained peas.
McDonald shakes are nasty and I can’t drink them. It doesn’t matter what it’s made of. I don’t know anybody that will drink one of them. Since we have a Culvers getting a malt is a treat. They came up with some coffee ice cream thing if you have to have coffee. the only chain coffee in this town is still fast food restaurants and Kwiki Trip coffee.
Ha! Another sucker here, but I only made it through one sip. I didn’t even bother to drive back to get my money back, though I considered it. The rest of it went in the garbage on the way out of the parking lot. Blech!
On a related note: Diet Lipton Green Tea. Because simply leaving it unsweetened would just be…well, unnatural.
