This is a crap argument. Just because someone is a board mainstay, or has some longevity does not give them a get out of jail free card. If a member does something worthy of being pitted, then they are fair game no matter what their contribution or membership date may be.

What’s worse is that her son has no choice in having every intimate detail of his young life put out on the Internet for everybody to see. Normal parents want to protect their children, but OpalCat does the opposite. It’s bad enough that OpalCat has no boundaries, but her lack of respect for her son’s privacy is just an example of how she sees those she is close with not as their own persons, but as an extension of her. It’s very narcissistic.
And, although we enough about OpalCat to write a biography that is more detailed and extensive than that for any American president, the jury is still out on whether she’s a vegetarian. She should be clear and tell us once and for all.

Let’s admit it. She’s thin (relatively speaking, compared to the majority of female Dopers), attractive, and has a nice rack. If OpalCat were pushing 300 pounds, she probably wouldn’t see a fraction the adoration and enabling she now receives from the Teeming Millions.
This isn’t a case of “let’s pick on the pretty girl”, either. There’s another female Doper that often posts requests for help or support for various issues, only her posts are usually met with quite a bit of criticism, and even hostility. That poster has admitted many times that they’re obese. Would OpalCat still be seeing {{hugs}} aplenty if she weren’t the SDMB’s “pretty girl?” What about if she weren’t a board “fellow” of sorts, and only joined the SDMB in 2005?
What is the point if pitting folks? Does it make us feel better, or what?
i’m not hostile towards opal, just frustrated. the buckeye thing isn’t even really a blip on the radar when compared to all these other issues. it’s just one of the things people tend to remember about her, probably because such a huge deal was made out of it at the time.
i’m sorry, but the fact that she has been here pretty much from day 1 should not give her a free pass to behave however she wants to. i think she’s gotten a lot of leeway from the staff due to this, but regular posters have every right to call her on her behavior.
i don’t want to drive her away from the board. it’s just maddening to watch her in action, especially after she made a point of starting a thread about how she’s different now (link is upthread), followed by a posting spree that clearly indicates she hasn’t changed at all.
it mostly frustrates me because she is raising a teenager and so her erratic behavior is alarming. i’ll say it again: sticking up for her is not doing her, or him, any favors.
This isn’t it at all. Taken in doses she seems kind of helpless and sweet. Once you examine the bigger picture, wherever that may be easily viewed, it’s clear there is a scary pattern.

The recent posting spree has been pretty weird. And it’s not just that she’s making a lot of posts, it’s that they’re…well, OK, for example, take the Cracked.com thing. I didn’t think her original request in that thread was too out of line, although she did phrase it a bit weirdly. So she wants people to give her a list of favorite articles. Fine. But then a couple of people called her out on it, and that prompted a series of posts from her, some consecutive, all about her request and how it was fine and people shouldn’t harsh on her, etc.
I mean, I don’t know, it’s hard to point it out in just one thread, because what I just described isn’t really too outrageous or unreasonable. But the tone was just sort of like… “I need to defend myself and I am going to do it at length even if it’s off-topic because this is really important to me” and that sort of tone seems to crop up a lot in her posts, particularly lately.
Anyway, I don’t have a big issue with Opal or whatever, but her style of posting in the past few weeks or so does seem to be a bit unusual.

Other people get pitted all the time. Do you get prissy about those pittings, and reprimand the people making or participating in them?
Oh, please. Opal doesn’t get a fucking pile-on half as often as she should for the idiotic nonsense she pulls. People get pitted all the time for stupid or annoying behavior. Opal’s not exempt from that just because she’s fucking Opal.
