Also worth noting that although this was a victory, it’s not without cost to the victors. That even will follow that family for the rest of their lives, and we don’t know how it will affect the kid as he grows up.
As far as the trans-specific aspects of this thread, I just wanted to say that a lot of us do take you seriously, and are paying attention.
…I’m going to quibble with this. Not that I disagree with the larger point. But I think it needs more context.
The institutions will hold up. As long as they are allowed to.
But they won’t hold up forever.
They are buying time.
It’s like a war on a battlefield. The enemy has you outflanked, but you are holding the line. But the line keeps getting pushed back. You need leadership. You need reinforcements. You need supplies. And if none of that comes…you get overrun.
I’ve been harshly critical of the Democrats, most notably the establishment Dems, because they are the missing piece of the puzzle. If they don’t come to the table, it all falls apart. But there is no leadership. Schumer and Jefferies are pathetic.
And even if by some miracle the Democrats (as is) were able to get some measure of power again, they won’t do anything with it. Abortion will still be outlawed in multiple states. Anti-trans laws on the books will remain. Government agencies that have been decimated or repurposed, from science to USAID to education to healthcare, won’t be very different under the Dems. Because the bar has been reset, and many establishment Dems and the donors that enable them won’t be that upset with that at all.
So while I agree that “spoonfuls of sand are being dropped on the track”, it will all get blown away unless the opposition gets its arse into gear. Harris campaigned on being stronger on the border and immigration than Trump. They only mentioned the word “trans” a single time during the last convention. They ignored the 77% of Democrat supporters who thought Israel was committing genocide in Gaza. And it looks likely they are going to ignore the 76% of Dem supporters who want to abolish ICE.
This isn’t a party that is seriously going to challenge the status quo. And for me, as an outsider looking in, this is the big thing that Americans are going to have to face. The frontlines aren’t going to hold up forever.
You believe Trump is going to kill millions of people. What should be your top priority?
Stopping Trump, even if it means you have to work with people who don’t believe that Trump is going to kill millions of people and working with them means you have to smile while concealing your opinions. Because stopping Trump from killing millions of people is the top priority.
Proclaiming your beliefs, even if it means you’ll be telling people who disagree with those beliefs that they’re idiots and alienating them from the cause. Because making sure everyone knows what you personally believe is the top priority.
I’ve always been opposed to Trump. I voted against him in 2016, 2020, and 2024. I vote in all elections and I always vote for Democrats. Because I can see how bad the Republicans are.
You don’t need to say anything to convince me to oppose Trump and the Republicans. And what’s more, nothing you can say would convince me not to oppose Trump and the Republicans.
But I’m not the person you need to communicate to. What you need to do is convince people who have voted for Trump in the past that they should not vote for him again. You need to convince people who have always voted for Republicans that they need to abandon the party. You need to convince people who never vote that they need to make the effort. You need to convince people who think the Democrats are just as bad as the Republicans that now is the time when they need to vote for the lesser of two evils.
You need to reach out to people - especially people who you are not in agreement with and convince them to join in the opposition to Trump and the Republicans.
And you will not convince people by telling them they’re fucking idiots if they disagree with you.
But we don’t need to win you over. If anything, we need to discredit you, so other people don’t listen to you and your truly terrible strategies for beating the Trump administration.
Let me see if I understand. You’re calling me a dumbass in order to discredit my political strategy and validate your own. And your political strategy is to call people dumbasses if they question your political strategy.
I feel you may have misread the meaning of the Democratic party’s donkey symbol.
