I Pit Political Ads

May I simply say:

Holy Fuckity Fucking Fuck, SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY WITH THE ADS!!! I doubt there is one living person in Virginia who has not gone partially blind and deaf from the never-ending stream of garbage out there right now.

If you don’t live in Va, particularly central and southeast Va, you have no concept of just how ridiculous it is. I watched 3 hours of primetime TV tonight and there was an ad for or against someone or other EVERY SINGLE AD BREAK. It was un-be-fucking-lievable.

I understand others are living in “battleground” states as well, and I invite them to also share their experiences. I personally have never seen it this bad ever.

And I would like to beat the snot out of the adsters who think truth in advertising is a cute phrase that once applied back in “ye olde dayes”. I can’t get one reliable fact out of any of them.

Right. There is plenty of information about the candidates out there (well, at the national level, at least). I totally ignore political advertising on radio and TV as a source of info.

Oh, and I pretty much ignore the political advertising that goes on here as well. Y’all know who you are.

I strongly suspect that development of the DVR was funded by companies headquartered in swing states.

Just every ad break? They’re pikers in VA apparently. In Florida it’s more like at least 2 every ad break. Sometimes more. Thankfully I’m only exposed to ads when other people have media on.

I haven’t seen a single political ad this year. Not one. It helps that I don’t watch anything on broadcast or cable TV, getting all of my video entertainment from the internet. It also helps that I have adblocking software on my computer. And it really really helps that I live in the most Democratic state in the nation, making us the lowest priority for both sides. I have no idea if anyone is even advertising here at all.

It’s a little disturbing to me that the only positive ads I see are from a Republican. I may not like the guy’s politics, but kudos to him for not mudslinging.

The only positive ads I’ve seen were from a guy who doesn’t even mention his party affiliation. Of course they don’t mention hardly any other policy other than mothers, apple pie, and the military, and would be equally annoying in their mindlessness if they played all the time, but were refreshing as a change.

They are there because they work. Find a method that will work better, amd politicians will use it.

Sure, and killing one’s grandma works as a method of avoiding nursing home bills. So? “Find a method that will work better, and people will stop killing their grandmas” doesn’t feel terribly insightful …

Ugh, I loathe political ads with a passion.
The worst are the female voiceovers where they first demean the opposing candidate with a quaver in their voice that sounds like a cross between them being scared for their lives about to break down sobbing and an annoying whiner.
Then the high toned quaver drops a a lower stern voice shaming the opposition like a disapproving mother.
“Oh why oh why Mr. Candidate do you want to hurt us so? It’s just not faaaairrr!
(sniff, sniff)… Tsk, tsk, your mother would be ashamed of you.”

Agree with Hampshire, but I’ll add to that the male voice overs as well. They talk like no normal person every talks, except maybe a disappointed Middle School principal. I hate the overwrought disgust and fear mongering with a hint of sarcasm thrown in… If your opponent has done something truly horrible, just tell me about it in a normal voice.

I’m in Virginia too and I find it amusing that the most frequent ads i see on the Rachel Maddow show are for Romney and Allen. I don’t really know what they are trying to achieve there.

There has been one instance, where I have seen commercial breaks with nothing but policital ads, but that only happened during a news broadcast on the local (Iowa) Fox station. First was Romney, then Obama, then Steve King, then Vilsack, then Boswell, then Latham. Literally, each major race, with the opponent’s commercials right afterward, all crammed into one commercial break.

Fortunately, I only saw that once. It was hideous.

The Democratic Party has been spamming my inbox with their ads and I have no idea where they got my email addy. Even better is that I’ve opted out twice and they are still coming. So I’ve just taken to forwarding random shit to them, maybe that will make it stop?

I live in a deep blue state (Maryland) but since most of our broadcast stations are out of DC, I get to see all of the adds that are there for the “benefit” of Virginians, even though they won’t sway the vote in this state at all.

I’ve never felt so lucky to live in California. So far this cycle I haven’t seen a single TV political ad. Just a few mailers for candidates for local offices.

Living in Texas, I only see ads for local candidates running for local offices (or the House seat in Congress). All-in-all, it’s been pretty quiet.

Other than local elections and issues, almost no ads in western Oregon, and I’m glad.

Inundated in Colorado. Better yet, next week the first debate is at the University of Denver. The school is a stone’s throw from Interstate 25, which is absolutely packed every evening, and is the single most traveled road in the state. Being so close to the debate site, they are shutting it down from 5PM to 10PM next Wednesday night. That is going to be a nightmare. Glad I don’t live near there.

You must be up north. Down here, piles of TV ads for both Pres candidates and for a few of the props as well.
