Yeah, that one stuck out to me as well.
Okay, that Echo and the Bunny Men song was not too bad.
Hipsters! Thank you! That’s the word I meant, apparently. I knew there had to be a better term.

Who the fuck are Jesus and Mary Chain?
Given that Grace Slick tried to dose Richard Nixon with LSD at a White House party, I’m going to go with “Yes.”
Grace was at college with Nixon’s daughter Tricia and was invited by Tricia to a tea party at the White House.
I define Yacht Rock as ‘music from the 1970s and 1980s that if you fall asleep listening to that channel, they’re not gonna play anything that’ll jar you back to consciousness.’
Of course, that’s also true of Sirius channels like The Bridge and The Blend.
Since I’m at the grocery weekly if not more often, is The Bleachers a band, a Sirius channel, what?
They’re a band. I had never heard of them either, and looked them up, and found this song (which I guess was their biggest hit, or at least what got them famous) and recognize it as a song I’ve heard now and then.
It’s very likely I’ve heard it at a grocery store. To be honest, I didn’t really recognize it until the hook which starts around 1 minute in.
I looked them up and most of the songs I thought were by them were by fun which is another band thats basically the same guy plus some other people no one cares about.
Man, don’t discount Nate Ruess like that. I loved The Format! He’s great.
You forgot ‘Freeze-Frame’. The same-titled album was my first album at like ten years old. I don’t think my mother knew what ‘Centerfold’ was about.
The J. Geils live album “Full House” is pretty good . It got quite a bit of airplay in the Bay Area back in the day. “Whammer Jammer” in particular stands out in my memory for Peter Wolf’s introductory rap.
Engaging with the audience and telling little stories and doing little raps were part of his regular schtick on stage. Note that he was doing this sort of stuff long before rap/hip-hop blew up, apparently it’s something he developed as young DJ in the 1960’s.
Years ago I went to a great concert with a bunch of bands from the 90s and had a great time. Sadly, a couple did not have their original lead singers (Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots) because they had died. They still had most of the rest of the bands and the new lead singers were passable replacements, so it was still enjoyable.
One band though was one I wasn’t really looking forward to; Bush. I don’t hate the band, and in fact I’ll sing along to a couple of their songs. They’re just not a favorite or anything.
But that Gavin Rossdale. He could perform. He was getting up on tables, dancing through the audience, riffing off the lyrics. He’s a guy that is 10 times better in person. It was the best and most memorable band of the night, despite being one of my least favorite there.
So I think I kind of know what you’re talking about. Some bands are just better live.
(Metallica is another one, though I’m already a big fan of their music from the radio anyway.)
I am amazed to see that in this discussion the Pixies haven’t been brought up once (JAMC slight derivative). I don’t think they are either yuppie or hipster, but I think they influenced a lot of the bands that no one knows. Similar to JAMC and the Velvet Underground.
Other than that, I don’t think there is a single band in this thread that I haven’t heard of or listened to.
Heheh, a bunch of Scotsmen who I can pretty much guarantee don’t give a fuck what you think of them. Heck, I’m a longtime fan and I doubt they’d give a fuck what I think of them.
And really, “hipster” is such a stupid fucking concept I won’t discuss it other than to deride it. It’s basically shorthand for “someone likes something kind of obscure I don’t like”. Get over yourself. You like crap music, I like crap music, everybody likes crap music. All of it will be obscure someday.
And if you don’t agree that Thee Oh Sees (or what ever they’re calling themselves this week) rule and you want to have John Dwyer’s babies, I am totally burning your dog.
Hell, my daily commute literally takes me down Sleater-Kinney Road (which the band is named for) five days a week!
No article. The name of the band is just “Bleachers”.
Indie rock band fronted by Jack Antonoff, the guy whose first claim to fame was as the guitarist for fun. and has gone on to become a songwriter-producer for Taylor Swift and several other pop stars.
Their best known song is probably “Rollercoaster”.
I’d just like to say congrats to everyone who made it through Post Number One. That was something.
Though if Idle Thoughts had taken all that time that he’d devoted to typing, he could’ve LISTENED to some of those 'bands nobody’s heard of" (that many of us appreciate).
Hey, I’m in my 70s and we made fun of the Yuppies, who were all older than we were… and I know all those bands.
What came through to me in the OP was “I’m getting old and set in my ways and anything that challenges my mental playlist makes me grumpy!”
And, ironically, they’re getting too old.
They played Summerfest two weeks ago, and Ian McCulloch’s voice is, well, I’ll be kind and just say it’s not what it used to be.
Aw, I used to like LNH. Haven’t kept up with them since their collaboration with Toadlick.
what?
Co-signed. My only complaint about this band is that I miss out on some of their albums because I forget what they call themselves and miss them in my playlist.
