I pit posters who know and like bands that I don't know and like!

uh, that might have been me. But if it was it was a sincere sentiment, one of my absolute favorite bands of all time

nah, or at least they weren’t originally. They started in the late 1970’s, well before the modern concept of “hipsters” was even a thing. Although it might make sense they would gravitate to them, these are some dark lyrics

So you’re saying they were making niche indie music for nerds before it was cool?

I have heard of these bands. I had vinyl albums of these bands. I liked these bands.

That’s because in the 80’s I had actual musical taste, and was not listening to the SHIT bands that you apparently listened to . REO Speedwagon? Shit. Musical PAP, played on commercial radio stations for teens that had NO ABILITY to discern good music, and just listened to what the station promoters TOLD THEM TO LISTEN TOO.

But some of us actually went out and found GOOD MUSIC. Like Echo and the Bunnymen. Like English Beat.

TLDR: Your opinion sucks.

While they have some memorable instrumentals, their biggest contribution to music is arguably as the in-house studio band for Stax Records. They’ve probably played on hundreds of soul/r&b hits.

“Green Onions” was one of two numbers that always got my Boomer parents and all their friends up and dancing at weddings (the other was “YMCA”).

When I think about Green Onions I think about Steve Cropper, who had quite a career both as a player and producer.

I’ve listened to most of the videos posted in here and some of the stuff’s not bad. Thanks for broadening my horizons.

I was thinking earlier, though, that even the straight dope message Board has an inside joke about random names… It’s whenever somebody quote something and goes “Band name!”. Exactly! Making fun of a phrase that sounds awesome or an interesting collection of words and joking about it. Because that’s what bands seem to be doing these days, having random names.

I should make a topic someday in cafe society, or somebody should,.. something like “name an indie band or singer that you don’t think anyone else has heard of other than you”

… And then we’ll see how many of the replies would be like “I know of that person /band! I love that person/band!”

Maybe someday.

Anyway, I’m glad to see this thread turned more into camaraderie and not having backfired on me.

..

To be fair, we stole that from Dave Barry.

“Stuck in the Middle…” got a revival 5 years later when Gerry Rafferty released the instant classic “Baker Street.”

You mean these guys?

That’s because all the good “real” band names have been taken. My latest band
has been looking for a good name, and every time we think of one, some bastard
has already thought of it.

The Rebellion Festival in Blackpool has some interesting band names in it’s line up here.

Even worse, one band might change their name multiple times and be known by more than one name.

Who are you thinking of? Jefferson Airplane->Jefferson Starship->Starship, getting worse with every name change?

Hehe, I instantly thought of Thee Oh Sees, who change their name because John thinks it’s funny.

The guy must be loved by his record company  Reminds me of Will Oldham aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy aka Palace Brothers aka Palace Music aka…

Heheh, fortunately he owns the record label!

Ah, that’s always the best for artistic independence! Ask Zappa.

Obviously, Idle Thoughts, you do not appreciate The Shaggs.
I holding you personally responsible for this.
Please - be crestfallen over this.
HARD! as the curlers say.

There may be the rare exception, but Real Musicians who refuse to sell out and write or cover Top 40 garbage are not Yuppies, not going to be heard of by Yuppies, maybe if they are lucky by academicians and hipsters (I mean actual hep cats and connoisseurs, so the polar opposite of “hipsters” if you want be accurate). Problem is, it is hard to pay your rent that way, and also amplifiers and microphones and stuff cost money.
