I pit posters who know and like bands that I don't know and like!

Really? There were “hipsters” in 1980?

And here I though " The term hipster in its present usage first appeared in the 1990s and became widely used in the late 2000s and early 2010s"

Usually, these kind of bands fall under the umbrella of underground, indie or alternative music. All genres I like very much, without ever being something like a hipster. And real yuppies in the yuppie decade of the 80s listened to Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and other crap like that.

I have to be fair and admit the possibility that the odd Yuppie might have taste. Also, frankly, some, even a lot, of the underground music in the underground clubs sucks, in conformity with Sturgeon’s Law.

Having been on staff at a College Radio station in the 80s, I kind of feel I must recuse myself…

OTOH,

Somewhere around the Dope there is an extensive thread of imaginary band names, who knows if you could gather inspiration. Though it tends to be heavy on references to stoats…

How about “Band Name!” as a name for your band?

The terminology is newer, but the attitude has existed forever. It’s why I identified myself as an ur-hipster above. The 80s-90s underground/indie/college radio/zine culture was rife with the “I love this band, you’ve probably never heard of them” culture.

The thing about music is that you don’t have to be a cool person to listen to a cool band. Anyone can listen to anything. Lots of Yuppies were listening to the exact same bands the proto-hipsters were listening to, they just weren’t bragging about it.

Or “Ironic Band Name” as the name.

I know this is against the flow of this thread, but I quite like the late 90s - now defunct - dark electro-ambient group “Dead Fish Don’t Grow Old”.

They had a website back in about 2005, when I last checked on them.

Judging by the accent in the heavily distorted vocals, I’d guess they were American. My favourite piece was one extolling Thomas Swift’s idea, “A Modest Proposal”, which, like their musical style, is quite unique subject matter.

You probably never heard of them.

That’s Jonathan Swift.

“Your favourite band sucks”

If you care what other people think about your musical tastes then you are, by definition, not cool.

You are correct.

To be fair, I have only read about the man, not actually read his works, but that is hardly a viable excuse.

Or, as a critic might say - and you missed your moment - “Jonathan Swift? I bet you never heard of him…”

Ha - I saw that o change to an a just in time !

“A Modest Proposal” is really enjoyable and worth checking out, and not very long (it’s an essay not a book or anything).
