I wasn’t critiquing your post–I was stating fact: I could not and cannot read your post as you posted it. From what I glean from others in the thread, your DIL’s mother is not the best of role models–therefore, I am sorry for your son and DIL. I have my own difficult MIL to contend with (although nothing on the scale related here). However, “ya no like”? Phonetically it makes sense.
You might not be able to prevent the paragraphing when copying and pasting, but once the material is here in the reply window, you can manipulate the sentences however you like. Use your delete key or cut and paste so that the whole is more cohesive.
I never intended this to be a pile on (when have I ever started a pile on?)–I meant what I posted: I could not read it and it gave me a headache trying to. Being here a month has nothing to do with anything, Duck. I think it’s more likely that some computer skills are lacking. Fair enough–that will come with practice.
I use http:// www.spellcheck.net it does language translation and math along with the spell checking. Iwill be more attentive to editting the paragraphs in my future posts.
I wouldn’t trust it any further if I were you. It missed all of these misspelled words in the OP:
I list these not to pick on you, but rather to pick on what appears to be a very poor online spell checker. Firefox caught all of these, and I suspect that Word would have as well.
Well we are really called ‘mountain williams’. because we have lived in these mountains for several generations and the family spends more time speaking in a ‘lazy American style’ language instead of proper english .And we tend to write and spell the same way we speak . I will put more attention to my using proper english when posting, but I won’t start speaking in proper english because then the family would just make one of the kids translate everything what comes out my mouth and there just ain’t enough hours in a day for that.
And now I am just rattling your chain because I’m over my mad about Racheal and am learning that I need to apply more attention to learning better posting
skills. It’s like “your not in (Kansas) yahoo chat anymore”
It would seem tje old saying " ya get whay you pay for " is true with this ‘free online spellchecker’
Well , you have just won a battle in my fight against my ignorance. and I thank you .I will change the tools I have been using starting now .
I am doing the paragraphs with this post and did it in my last one but it isn’t showing up .
Perhaps you misunderstand how to use it? The first option in the dropdown box is your spelling; you need to look lower in the list to find the correct one.
As far as the paragraphs, just hit an extra hard return to leave a blank line between paragraphs. Don’t hit a hard return between sentences. This board doesn’t take indenting and the like.
ETA: And I see the indents when I look at your quote in my reply, but not when it’s posted. Odd.
Welcome to the SDMB, katpohl. My, my, this is a bit of a trial by fire for your first Pit rant, isn’t it?
Congratulations are due to you, both for being such a good and supportive mother-in-law, and for having raised a son with the strength, clear-sightedness and compassion that you’ve described here.
Joyce and her siblings seem to have internalized the horrible warning that their mother’s life represents, and decided, quite firmly, that they want no part of that type of experience. I hope they succeed in staying out of Racheal’s path in the future.
You can hardly expect newbies to catch on to all the local memes–one of which happens to be an insistence on correct spelling and grammar by a certain contingent of posters–in only a month.
YMMV.
I am proud to say that in eight years of posting here, I have never once criticized a single poster’s grammar, spelling, or punctuation. At all. To me, content is more important than form.
I’ve noticed that your posts are always correctly spelled. That’s the only point in their favor.
katpohl, I’m glad to hear Joyce isn’t following in her mother’s footsteps. It’s not her fault she was ignorant about child-rearing because she was deprived of a good example; the fact that she was willing and able to learn says a lot about her character.
“White trash” isn’t a pretty term, but sometimes it applies, and can be found in any state in the Union.
Something else to lay at her mother’s door is Joyce’s inability to realize that praise can be meant sincerely. It sounds to me that she’s managed to heal a lot of the damage done her by That Woman; I hope she learns to heal this, too. And good on you for recognizing that giving encouragement and praise when merited is the right thing to do.
Can Joyce and/or other family members get a restraining order against Racheal?
I think, at the very least, that I would notify this person (and her current boyfriend) that if she comes to visit, she will not be provided with food, shelter, or any other amenities. Also, I’m pretty sure that one doesn’t need to provide a ticket (Greyhound or otherwise) to get a person out of the house. Just tell her to go, and if (when) she doesn’t, call the sheriff to evict her. If this pisses Racheal off so much that she never visits again, YOU WIN!
Your posts read like you’re typing them on a typewriter - that is, you’re hitting Enter (or carriage return) when the words start to get towards the right side of the screen. Don’t do that; it screws up the formatting when you copy/paste the text. Instead, just keep on typing and let the words wrap to the next line on their own. You should only be pressing Enter when you want to end a paragraph.
Also, note that due to the way certain web technologies work, most message board software isn’t going to like seeing several spaces in a row, and will shrink that down to a single space. Because of this, people online tend to seperate their paragraphs with a blank line between them rather using a tab indentation at the beginning of a new paragraph.
