Look, I realize that not everybody in any given group is going to think the same way. But I think it’s pretty safe to make this generalization, in this case. I should add that I’m not at all surprised that at least two people here have apparently tried to spin this into accusing me of being racist; this just illustrates how ridiculously touchy people have become.

This is one of them there “privileges” of being in a minority group. You can kid or insult other members of the group using words that would have an entirely different impact coming from someone outside the group.
Something else that is often overlooked, is that non-members of a minority group do not get to decide what should or should not be offensive to members of that group. Outsiders can piss and moan about it all they want, but the decision is not theirs to make.

Screw that. Minorities don’t get to tell the rest of us what we can and can’t say about them. And even if they did, then the majority should get to tell them what they can or can’t say. We already tiptoe far too much around the sensitive little feelings of minorities (or rather, hypersensitive subgroups within minorities who look for excuses to be offended).
What can or can’t be said in public in a society is an important indicator of who holds power in that society.
Well, we can’t say “Fire!” in a crowded theater in our society. I guess that means we’re all under the thumb of the fire marshals.
We can’t decide what offends minorites but we can decide whether that offense is reasonable or just plain ignorant and dumbass. For instance, I’m not going to stop using picnic because some idiot has swallowed the urban legend about its origin and claims to be mortally offended. I’m afraid they’ll just have to put up with it.

I don’t know how you took “non-members of a minority group do not get to decide what should or should not be offensive to members of that group” and twisted it into that group telling you what you can or cannot say. Feel free to use any and all terms that you wish to throw around for whatever group you wish to discuss. But only a fool would think that you get to decide for the individual members of that group how they should feel about those terms.
I’m the blackest black man in a thousand miles, and I wasn’t offended. I require an appropriate context to take offense.

ETA: Hey, that’s odd. Now I do (have problems copying text from Snopes). But I can still paste the text I copied from my first attempt, no problem. I guess I got lucky and clicked before some Javascript kicked in or something.
Yeah, definitely a script. I use the FF addon NoScript on my other laptop and once you disable the scripts on Snopes everything works fine. This is my gf’s laptop though and she hates ‘geeky’ addons.
