I pit SkipMagic for being twee

You really need to find a new adjective, guinnog. You wore out “twee” about half way through your OP.

Less whining in general would also be nice, but I’m trying to be realistic in my expectations.

I find it truly amazing that you know all about the ‘ethos of the sdmb’ after having been here less than a month.

OK, here’s an honest answer for you, absent all the whining about “six year tradition” and whatnot.

The problem is that the thread is in MPSIMS. MPSIMS is not for debating, it’s for, well, Mundane, Pointless, Stuff I Must Share - although, memorial threads aren’t really mundane or pointless. The real purpose of the MPSIMS area (and IMHO) is to be able to do those sorts of things, without worry that someone is going to hijack it into a debate.

The proper procedure, if you wanted to debate WWII strategy, would have been to start a new thread in Great Debates and, if you wanted to, posting a link to it in the MPSIMS thread.

Really, your main “offense” was to start debating in an area that’s not supposed to be a debating area.

Hope that helps.

Well, gosh, now that we know that, I’m just certain everyone’s going to be lining up to kiss your ass.

Or not. Feel free to fuck off, you whinging cunt.

I see.

Well, that’s helpful.

So I erred when I started debating in

(Message 330), would you say that post transgressed your rules?

I would say it was borderline. It’s not a hard and fast rule, though, it’s more of a popular convention. The proper thing to do after roger_thornhill made his rebuttal of your assertion would have been to say “I don’t want to hijack this thread, let’s continue this discussion in Great Debates” and provided a link to the thread you started.

The reason you got picked on rather than roger was because you continued on with it. Particularly your post #339, in response to RickJay. MPSIMS just isn’t the place for substantive debate.

This is a more serious offense than you seem to realize.

Thanks, I will. Is your use of the c-word because you came from one or because you are nostalgic?

Both?

If you wanted to compete in insults, I think I could beat you. But let’s not.

[Memo to self: lurking doesn’t always work]

Thanks. That’s really helpful advice. I wish the Mod had said that rather than warning me. Eh, SkipMagic?

I’d say can the pitting guinnog before you make a complete prat of yourself. You can start any discussion about the Holocaust in GD or the Pit without inapropriately posting in a long standing thread with a quite different purpose. Though, I’m affraid that since the thread you dumped in is resurected every year your name might be hard to clear of this stigma.

Thanks!

I was not trying to offend anyone and I apologise if I did. I find these warfests a little bit ‘nice’ sometimes and I suppose I wanted to promote some debate about why we have these wars. I recognise that I did it in the wrong place and I will know better the next time.

I repeat: if you want to have ‘nice’ threads, I think you should sticky it or show it in some other way.

WW2 was not ‘nice’; I was talking to a guy in a pub the other night who fought in it. A RN submariner. He was telling me some awful stories.

The link between wars, ancient, modern and future, was my point. We should never celebrate the losses of past generations without thinking of its relevance to the present, and how we can make a difference in preventing future death and suffering, was my point.

If that is enough to get me warned by a Mod, rather than just telling me to take it to Great Debates, I stand corrected.

I hope eventually that I can wear the ‘stigma’ with pride. If I can promote some honest debate about war, the ethics thereof, fight a little ignorance. My intentions are good, sorry if you misunderstand them.

  1. Where in that thread does anyone say war is nice? Specific examples, please.

  2. Over three hundred posts did not clue you in on what the topic was?

  3. Just how did you suffer all that brain damage?

Your (2) is your answer to your (1). And some of the reaction I have had. For daring to say that we could have prevented some of the holocaust. If we had cared enough. Just like nowadays.

(3) Aha! Now that would be telling…

Hopefully, you now realize that the proper forum for that is Great Debates, not Mindless Pointless Stuff I Must Share.

Yes, as I said already, now I understand.

I still think the Mod could have done it better.

I still Pit your anger at my introducing reality into your war-worship.

HTH

guinnog, do you like your billygoats roasted on a spit, or raw?

Yeah, they could have. But they’re human. It happens. Anyway, if you understand the situation now, you may want to request this thread be closed, lest it become a big pile-on. No harm, no foul. Just remember that aggressive debating is good, but keep it to Great Debates or the BBQ Pit. If you’re not in one of those forums, then it’s best to let stuff go or start a thread in one of those two forums. You’ll be fine.

How, precisely? He told you what you were doing wrong, he told you how to do it correctly, and he told you not to do it again. And he didn’t even insult you in the process. What did you want him to do that he did not do?
