Then the correct thing to do would have been to open a thread here in the Pit and title it something to the effect of, Question about Mod Action. Then you could have asked the mod in question why he took the action he did.

He has stated here http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9989553&postcount=118 that I made false statements about, and gave insults to, other posters, which even though there were no specifics about anyone in the thread or elsewhere, I still apologised for the inappropriateness of.

Except that’s not at all what you did. What you did was make a general post saying people shouldn’t tattle on other people. You didn’t specify what thread (until asked) and you didn’t specify that you were upset that a mod warned you for something.
I don’t understand why your upset at a “tattletale”. The mods, I am sure, ignore plenty of whining from posters with bruised feelings. They have said so.
If a mod reviews the thread, and agrees with the complaint, they take it to a group mod huddle. After a concensus is reached among the group, action is taken. (Warning, suspension, or perma-ban.)
So unless you do something worthy of official mod attention, why do you care if another poster wastes a mod’s time?

It would be interesting to find out who the mod in question thought you were insulting, given that rulings in the past were to the effect that insulting groups to which other Dopers belong is OK. Der Trihs and some other folks do this all the time.
Interesting, but probably not productive. tomndebb has decided he doesn’t like your posting style, and is going to keep after you. Stick to the other fora for a while, build up your post count, and eventually you will figure out when to ignore people who are trying to bait you.
They aren’t trying to influence (OK, maybe to some degree), we have seen this before. tomndebb isn’t going to change. He doesn’t have to; he’s a mod. If you try to defend yourself, he’ll ban you. The rest are trying to get in on the pile-on. It’s a pecking party.

Because you are displaying a typical pattern.
“Guest” joins board.
Guest plays nice for a short while.
Guest begins pushing boundaries of trolling, jerkishness.
Guest acquires warnings and either starts or receives pittings.
Guest flames out immediately or plays a game where he softens then dials it up again and tries to get banned as close to one month anniversary as possible.
Right, I’m gonna suspend myself for the weekend and hopefully come back with a better perspective on Monday. To anyone I have seriously annoyed or offended, I sincerely apologise this time, as it has never really been my intention. I know there are a lot of smart people on this forum, and I came here to learn from them, and to bounce thoughts of my own off them, and yes, occasionally pit my debating skills against them.
