I Pit Surprise Razoring of my Nipples

I’m a guy, and all this sounds just…ow. Especially the slicing of the nipple off with the razor. OW!

Never shaking the razor again. Never. Never. Never.

And even that maybe too soon!

I was holding the cat once, and she decided she needed to jump out of my arms onto the sofa right now and she decided that a good method to do so would be to plant her back claws in me, to give her a little more purchase. One claw was so aimed as to cause a scratch, bleeding profusely, right over my nipple. That was one of the most painful experiences of my life. The cat looked utterly terrified at my cry of pain, and immediately went to hide behind the sofa, and then looked nervously out as if she expected me to exact some revenge. I’m a guy, and it was just a scratch, but fuck did that ever hurt. I can’t imagine what women go through when their nipples get injured.

Fuck. After remembering this, I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.

Um, as I’m expecting a baby in September and I was planning on breastfeeding…All I can say is, dear God, what was I thinking???

I will be cringing for weeks.

SO glad my son was a late teether. Even so, hishard little gums could gnaw pretty painfully. My pediatrician suggested a gentle thump of his cheeks with a finger and a firm "no coupled with removal of the breast.

They really do understand the whole “biting = no breast” thing very quickly.

Wow! Teeth at four months! That’s something. Baby Gwen is eight months and just beginning to show bumps where those things will come in.

inkleberry, I have to tell you that I followed the saga of little Tinkleberry since the beginning, first for the “human factor” (did that sound too CNN?) and second because I am quickly approaching motherhood and, well, your threads have been most educational. This one however was a bad, bad idea… I am starting to see my boobs as the first cassualty in this war.

Another vote for please do not use the word razor and niples in the same paragraph, let alone in the same sentence. Yikes!

tinkleberry, is there something about your story that you’re not telling us?

Just wait till they get a little older and start using your nipples as things to “pull up” on. My daughters think they’re mountain climbing pitons. (as opposed to titons, I suppose! :stuck_out_tongue: )

Mom had a trick for stopping us from biting. A slight “sting” with the fingers on our cheek when we bit. We’d startle slightly, and re-adjust.

My daughter was a pirana, who injured me with just sucking for the first time. And then broke through her first tooth at 2.5 months. Best thing to remember (for me) was that scabs are hard and they should not be pulled on. I needed to soak with warm water before nursing to soften the scab, otherwise her nursing was excrutiating and nothing was healing.

Thankfully she self-weaned at 6 months, after we introduced cereal and she had 4 teeth fully in and was working on the next 4.

Darn it. Wasn’t going for the double-post today. That was supposed to be tomorrow…

Owie :frowning: Baby Dax’s first two teeth came in two weeks ago. She had a double ear infection at the same time and wasn’t latching on properly, so I ended up with cracks in both nipples shudder. I’ve had 'em before, so I just treated with lanolin and carried on.

Fast forward to Good Friday. I vaguely remember posting something in the Pit and then leaving work early to stumble home and go to bed. Saturday I woke up with a 103 temp, headache, nausea, chills, etc. That’s all I remember about Saturday :frowning: Sunday I woke up and the top of my left breast was red and hot. AHA! The dreaded mastitis! Frantic calls to my doctor ensued. Thank god there was someone on call or I would have gone to the ER. After 8 days of powerful antibiotics I am feeling better, but I am giving some thought to weaning. So the moral of the story is: When baby bites or you have a crack in your nipple and it doesn’t seem to be healing, watch out for other symptoms. You could end up with a serious problem.

Now, my son was a chronic biter. He thought it was funny. Everytime I thought he’d outgrown it, he would try to sneak a quick nip in. I nursed him for 15 months. He’s still the mischievious, limit-pushing type. Anyone want a gently used 2 1/2 year old? We could probably work out free shipping

So… planned nipple-razoring is acceptable or desirable?

Hannibal Lecter: Tell me, Senator: did you nurse Catherine yourself?
Senator Ruth Martin: What?
Hannibal Lecter: Did you breast-feed her?
Sen. Martin’s Aide: Now wait a minute…
Senator Ruth Martin: Yes, I did.
Hannibal Lecter: Toughened your nipples, didn’t it?

I had expected this thread to be about men shaving their hairy nipples.

Babies cannot bite if their latch is good. Pay attention to the latch and you can head off most bites before they occur. The presence of new teeth should not stand in the way of continuing the breastfeeding relationship.

For those expecting/planning on children, take heart. Not all babies bite. The only time Chloe kind of bit me was when I was trying to latch her on in a really awkward position, and her teeth made contact first.

Now that she’s a toddler, she does tend to test the elasticity of my nipples (she would dearly love to be able to nurse and dance around the living room at the same time), but that doesn’t hurt like a bite.

And thanks for the laugh, Boggette. We have an oft-used saying around here: “nipples are not handles!”

Tink’s latch is good, BUT as a newborn he didn’t have a rooting reflex or a good suck reflex, and so tended to latch really weird when he did it at all. Now he’s great, except in the lying down position, which is the only one he bites in. I don’t think he feels as secure or closely held, so bites to keep be absolutely sure the breast stays in his mouth. So no more lying down feeding.

That sucks (not literally…lol). Lying down has always been my favourite nursing position especially at night. Hopefully as he gets older, he will go back to nursing properly lying down.

My daughter used to bite whenever she was teething (ouchie) but she soon learned not to bite. And lanolin was my friend :). She now has 12 teeth at 14 months and though she hasn’t bitten me in months, she still gives wicked teeth indentations when she nurses (doesn’t hurt, but my nips look a little mangled afterwards).

But for all those contemplating breastfeeding…aside from the occasional ouchie (and usually a couple of difficult weeks in the beginning), it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. If you do your homework and are determined to breastfeed, you overcome these hurdles. I mean if inkleberry can overcome everything she’s been through with Tinkleberry, and still keep nursing, so can you!
