“Better” numbers, but they wont’ match your narrative (but note that exit polls weren’t too good this go around)
What do you mean, better numbers? Those are the same–our links both go to NBC News exit poll numbers. Your link has them broken down more ways, but if you scroll down you will see that he won white women by a double digit margin (53-43), just like it says at my link.
Ya…well scroll down to “Gender by marital status” then try to make the numbers match…they numbers are pretty useless.
Those aren’t broken into a third dimension of race. That doesn’t make them useless, but you can’t “match” them without that.
OK but you do concede that Trump voters are less educated, more xenophobic, more religious while being less tolerant of other religions at the same time then?
So with that thing the problem is that we obviously have more bigoted, uneducated white women…and this is better how?
Note Fox’s numbers, educated white women far preferred Hillary on their exit polls.
(this is probably the only time I will ever cite fox news but it does show how arbitrary exit polls are)
This makes me so sad. All the women in my family and most of the other women I know voted for Hillary. Most of us have at least some college, though.
I just don’t understand why his supporters can’t see that he’s a con artist. I spotted it right away, but I was married to one once, so maybe only people who have fallen for this shit before would recognize it.
I think most of those who voted for him do see that, but voted for him regardless. I’ve previously called him an honest liar: he knows he’s lying, the audience knows he’s lying, he knows they know he’s lying, and they know he knows they know he’s lying. But he’s not Clinton. He’s not the Establishment which they see as having failed them so badly. He could be Kodos or Kang and they’d still have voted for him.
I never said anything about “better”. I was responding to a woman who was basically saying it was all men’s fault and women should punish them with the “Lysistrata time” method. My only point is that women, white women at least, share a good portion of the blame.
But Trump getting 45% of white women who are college graduates is still super fucked up. I would have never predicted that. There was so much talk about how far underwater in the polls he was with them.
No, I’ve never been conned (in an actual con artist sense; obviously I’m not saying no one has ever successfully lied to me), and it’s completely obvious to me. It’s a very, very poor commentary on the American people. Or about half of them, I should say. Everything I understand about the polling and human nature and common sense (even though my understanding of those has been admittedly shaken) suggests that the vast majority of those who voted for someone besides Trump consider him a completely unacceptable and ludicrous candidate. Much more than we’ve ever seen in modern American history, I’d say. I think probably at least 20% of the people who voted for McCain and Romney weren’t utterly horrified by Obama winning, even if a sizable majority of them were. Same for those who voted for Gore and Kerry when Dubya won. I think the percentage of Hillary voters who shrug and think “oh well, he’s not *so *bad” is likely much lower.
Well what do you propose? What do we do about this? What’s the way forward when none of the following convinces people to vote dem:
[ul]
[li]The republican brags openly about sexual assault and is then accused of sexual assault by a dozen women[/li][li]The republican candidate is obviously and evidently a racist bigot[/li][li]The republican candidate lies constantly about essentially everything[/li][li]The democratic candidate proposes clear, well-thought-out policy solutions to deal with many of the problems facing people voting Republican; the Republicans notably do not[/li][li]The republican candidate is clearly and evidently unsuited to become president merely on his temperament and can be (and is) repeatedly baited into twitter wars with random people[/li][/ul]
And so on, and so on, and so on.
What the fuck do you do about that? How do you reach out to these people? Clinton tried. In fact, she put in far more work catering to them and their needs than Trump ever did. She actually had a plan to help. Trump offered vague promises based in fucking nothing (barring literal magic, those coal jobs aren’t coming back, and no amount of good trade deals will fix that).
What’s the way forward? These people are morons. They don’t think. You call that arrogant if you want (I came to that conclusion after spending the better part of a year trying to prove myself wrong on that point), but the fact is that today, we learned that a majority of the country shouldn’t be trusted with anything more dangerous than safety scissors, let alone a nuclear arsenal.
Not quite a majority–but a well-distributed near-majority, anyway.
But yeah: even if you leave aside (Although why would you? But just for the sake of argument) his sexual predation, his bigotry, his cringeworthy buffoonishness (which is after all a product of our elitist snobbery from a certain POV), etc., there is one thing above all else in what you posted that proves more than anything else what blithering idiots these people are. Mid-20th century America is not coming back. That’s gone. It’s the 21st century, and never mind modern liberal “PC” values: there’s no *economic *impetus to bring it back, no matter what you do–unless, I guess, you are somehow so rich that you make the Rust Belt into some kind of “Westworld” theme park where it’s all seemingly restored.
So do they really just want a president who shares their nostalgia? Who will sit around and pine ineffectually for a lost era he can’t bring back? Because that seems pretty lame and pointless. If it’s not that, then they think he really *can *somehow bring it back, and that is blindingly stupid.
Perfectly put.I was none to happy with the prospect of W as president but when it came to pass I just went on with my life. This is something different altogether. I feel like I’ve just discovered that all my neighbors are racist, misogynistic morons. By no means am I saying all republicans are those things; again, this seems to go way beyond party issues. I feel like there’s a lot more ignorance and hate in this land than I was aware of and it’s sad and scary, and frankly I am not proud to be an American today.
Do you think the attitude displayed in this post might cause whites without a college degree to dislike people like you and your party?
You mean like when we elected Obama twice?
We lost because we nominated the most unelectable person in the country because she insisted it was her turn.
We lost because our nominee bled out from self inflicted wounds and friendly fire (thanks Dabbie Wasserman Schultz and Donna Brazile)
We lost because the media wanted this to be a horserace and tried to keep it close, not realizing they were throwing the election to Trump.
We lost because despite e3very effort of the Republican party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, we are better at it than they are.
I’ve been taking an online class on marketing for my side business, which is interesting timing because:
This morning it occurred to me that Trump didn’t run on politics. He simply marketed the hell out of himself and it worked. He used the marketing strategies of fitting himself into a tribe of people and manipulated people’s emotions and hot buttons. All of the lies and vague promises were no different from advertisements that imply you’ll get all the hot pussy you want if you just drink THIS beer or drive THIS car. I think that’s how the nation got bamboozled into electing him president.
The fact that his supporters try to wave away his racist, homophobic statements as not being what he really means, but he just wants a better country is exactly how dumb people wave away the psychology behind marketing. (“Oh, I don’t fall for ads. I buy just what I want to buy.” … yeah, right.)
I am watching Hillarys concession speech live now on youtube, and I find the Trump supporters flowing comments saying:
LOCK HER UP
CRY BITCH CRY
particularly vile, these are trash human beings, and I wish suffering upon their souls.
Oh, they will suffer. But, they’re still going to blame you for it.
Yes, I could almost pity them, if their motives for electing Trump weren’t so fundamentally vile.
If they think he is going to do anything to help anyone but himself and his wealthiest supporters from here on out they are sadly mistaken.
Yet this here is itself an exercise in arrogant bigoted stereotyping.
It would be fair to say that liberals think they are smarter than Trump voters. And you probably do too. Than the other trump voters.
