I Pit the North Carolina General Assembly

Latest information is that the raise is for teachers with 0-5 years experience. If only I could figure out a way to quit and be rehired as a beginning teacher, what a raise I could get!

morning rage

That’s from the Asheville Citizen-Times. It’s also a load of…well, I’d call it bullshit, but bullshit is actually useful.

Yeah, letting my license expire now seems like the best decision I could have made.

Heh–that’s the third different thing that I’ve read on this subject. Apodaca’s claim that the raise is for teachers in grades 0-9 seems pretty authoritative.

My favorite rage-y bit from the story:

McCrory, you lowered taxes in the middle of a recession, slashing education budgets to the bone. You don’t get to pat yourself on the back for finding a scrap of money after all those cuts.

They haven’t had enough time to start voting consistently democratic, so they don’t need to be punished.

Heh.

I just read another article with a chart showing the actual proposal (at least I think it’s the actual one), verifying that the proposal will ensure that no teacher is paid less than $33,000, which is a relief. It’ll mean that a teacher with 8 years experience is paid $30 more annually than a beginning teacher, which is annoying, but not as bad as being paid less than a beginning teacher would be, and not as bad as continuing to be paid a put-your-kids-on-Medicaid salary.

Are teachers in NC required to get a Master’s Degree? They are here in OH.

Not only not required to do so–they just canceled the pay bump you get for obtaining a master’s degree. A teaching license is required; for me, I had to complete 2.5 years of coursework in addition to my undergrad degree in order to obtain the license.

[sarcasm]But there must be tons of state financial aid and scholarships to help teachers pay for those state-mandated degrees, right?[/sarcasm]

Some quick math . . .
$33,000 / 180 days of school / 25 kids in class / 6.5 hours of school = $1.13 per hour per kid!? I pay the babysitter better than that! (And they’re not nearly as qualified and don’t have nearly as high of expectations). You suck NC!

I’m not in any way defending NC here, but your math sucks. By the same formula, making $60k a year works out to $2 a kid. Teachers deserve more, but your methodology needs work.

Yeah, I’m afraid I agree. The difference between teaching one kid and teaching 20 kids is pretty big, but it doesn’t call for a twentyfold increase in pay.

Also I work lots more than 180 days @ 6.5 hours/day :). But that road’s been down before.

Meanwhile, over on the executive side of Raleigh:

"OK, how about this one? ‘The Grey Sludge of Prosperity’? OK, how about ‘That’s not pollution, that’s jobs!’. No? Wait, wait, got it!! ‘Jesus walked on the water, and now, so can YOU!’

I think the old saying about the French Broad River applies here: “Too thick to drink and too thin to plow.”

Just bumping this up because apparently redistribution of wealth via taxes is now something Republicans are doing.
NC General Assembly Redistributing Sales Tax Revenues

Maybe it’s the cynic in me but the first thing I do when I hear about the latest NC General Assembly proposition is to think of what must be the underlying ulterior motive. I guess taking money from the urban areas and giving it to the rural areas is throwing a bone to their voter base.
