Nice people made the best Nazis. My mom grew up next to them. They got along, refused to make waves, looked the other way when things got ugly and focused on happier things than ‘politics’. They were lovely people who turned their heads as their neighbors were dragged away. You know who weren’t nice people? Resisters.
Notice how quickly this thread went from a reasonable thread involving thread to “Let’s not add anything to the discussion, just insult Trump”.
Hint: it starts with the first reply.
There isn’t (currently) any politics in the active threads on brewing coffee and brewing tea.
But there are an awful lot of topics that have a political element. It was weirdly warm yesterday (global warming?); it looks like bird flu is becoming common in dairy herds; what car should i buy (do i care about gas efficiency? About avoiding gas?); i had a bad reaction to my recent covid vaccine (will we even have vaccines next year?).
A special purpose board can ban politics, and be useful. You can talk about what cameras are best and how to take good photos without being too inhibited by a politics ban. But a general purpose board with a ban on politics would be a sad and stilted place.
As a practical matter I think people had best get used to it since even in a best case scenario Trump and his fellow lunatics are going to be flailing around for years doing such massive amounts of damage that ignoring them won’t be practical. Nationwide disasters are like that, and they seem set to cause multiple ones at one; economic, political, legal, military and epidemic.
This isn’t an “obsession”, it’s just the first incoming breeze of the storm.
Yeah, what people who demand “no politics” ignore is just how much politics intrudes into basically everything. In real life a “no politics” rule just means that a specific political paradigm is enforced by the moderation while everyone pretends it’s “not politics”.
To use your example of a camera forum, what if the prices spike because of Trump’s actions? What if some components become outright unavailable because of him sparking a trade war? There’s all sorts of ways politics can intrude on that.
One thing that frequently bothers me about the intrusion of political discussions into everything is that it’s often seems to serve no purpose other than to provide a cathartic release of stress to the person doing the political ranting. As an analogy, it’s like someone who complains about traffic, but is just complaining to complain. They aren’t looking for constructive solutions about how to avoid clogged roads or how to support road projects. They are upset about the traffic and just want everyone to know they are upset. The political interjections into all discussions frequently strike me the same way. The person complaining about politics seems to be complaining mostly to relieve their own stress over the current political environment. It’s one thing to bring up the politics around climate change if I’m trying to decide where to move to, but it’s annoying when it’s in response to a greeting like “Nice day, isn’t it?”, I don’t want to get responses like “Enjoy it while you can before Trump destroys the environment!” or “See, climate change is a hoax!”. Yes, climate change is an important issue, like most political topics, but there are times when it’s relevant and welcome to the discussion and times when it’s not.
I think that people are seeing an “intrusion of Trump into other subjects” that mostly isn’t there. Once you get outside of explicitly political, military and economic matters I just don’t see him mentioned much if at all.
It’s difficult for me to picture that happening while the GOP has control of the House. So, I don’t think it’s any earlier than 2027 (and that assumes that the Democrats can flip the House).
