But if what I am hearing and understand, the ABS system must lock up the tires to test traction. A good driver that knows the road, his tires and conditions does not necessarily need to do that but a few times. Not 20 times a second. That’s a lot of sliding there.

ABS systems don’t need to lock the tires to test traction. The road exerts a force back into the wheels, the sensor measures the force, and can gauge the amount of traction available.
