I pit you, the general public.

Maybe. But AtPG isn’t asking for 20%, he’s asking for enough to bring him up to minimum wage, since that’s the pay structure he works under.

It’s a mistake to overmoralize pay structures. If something’s a luxury (like delivery pizza), and if you know what the pay structure is (pay the company, tip the driver), then whether you think it’s a good structure or a bad structure, it’s incumbent on you either to follow the structure or to not purchase the goods.

Glad this bastard is banned.

Just because of this thread, I’m going to order a pizza this week and give a big tip to the delivery guy! Plus I haven’t had pizza in a while

I was actually expecting a whole string of these sorts of posts as a response to my first one.

You’re correct that the customer doesn’t owe me a compliment, or a pleasant experience.

They do owe me civility. It’s a business transaction, I am not their slave. They should treat me with civility. I didn’t ask anyone to send me flowers or compliment my awesome hair.

They do owe me something for my time, in the form of cash. Those are the two things owed to me that I have asked for.

If that makes me entitled (not sure what "self-entitled" means, seems like verbal diarrhea to me. Perhaps you meant self-important or self-righteous or self-centered, which are actual terms) then so be it.

I guess I’ll just have to live with the shame of that. What a cross to bear. I can barely keep myself together now.

You make me laugh. In a good way. Not at you, just at our little exchange.

I assure you I can type fast too, and read fast, I just have to work a bunch and take care of my baby and wife.

Ya know, stuff that comes with growing up. I’d love to carry on, but I have to go do stuff in real life. So, maybe I’ll check back and stick my face out for you to whack on some more later tonight. Cheerio!

Stuff The Feathers Under … what?

I am appalled reading this. I find it appalling that people getting food delivered think they do not have to tip and that people do not have to be civil to their food service workers.

I am also astonished that Askthepizzaguy has worked out that 2 bucks tip per delivery is enough for him to squeak by and I’ve never worked a day in a restaurant in my life. I am appalled that he does not even make minimum wage.

I try to tip for my takeouts, and I tip the delivery guy. I don’t get so many deliveries now that I’ve got my driver’s license but for the love of cupcakes, these people are bringing me a meal that I don’t have to cook, only clean the leftovers.

Excellent.

I’m totally ordering a pizza now.

Ordered a pizza delivered tonight and tipped 5 dollars using my credit card. Tipping with a card is Ok right? I think it is just cab drivers who hate tipping by card?

Everyone hates tipping with CC as they then have to pay taxes on it.

But $5? Dude, anything less than a C-note and you’re being a cheap-ass.

The real scoop:

It is okay for me and I think, most people in my situation. Reason: I would rather pay taxes on my tip than not get one.

Taxes for my income bracket aren’t unreasonable, and even if they were, normal logic, not rich people logic, applies.

Whenever I hear Bill Maher complain about the 50 percent of his income he pays in taxes, I laugh my butt off. And he’s a liberal like me. But here is where his brains have fallen out: He still makes more than 99.9 percent of the people in the richest nation on earth, even after taxes. So he needs to stop being a big crybaby. Other people have actual, legitimate gripes about money.

It’s true, if you tip me on a credit card, I have to claim more. But I’m earning more money. When has earning more money ever been a bad thing? I am happy to pay taxes on money I am earning.

Did you know my employer requires me to claim $3 per hour in tips, whether I earn them or not?

I’d rather earn $5 and claim that I earned $5 than earn $1 and be forced to claim and pay taxes on a further two dollars that I did not earn.

There’s a further argument for someone like me, in a high crime area. This is just for me, doesn’t apply so much to the drivers in the nicer areas, they might have a gripe with this. But I’d prefer to be tipped on your card, if you’re paying with one.

Why?

That means I’m carrying less cash. If I get robbed, they can’t have that money. I get it at the end of my shift, when it is safe.

I prefer tips on the card, over cash.
Then, I prefer cash.

That’s just me. Other drivers might prefer it the other way. But seriously, you have my permission to not give a crap if the driver doesn’t like that you’ve tipped him on a card. Because you HAVE tipped him, and that IS taxable income.

If he complains, direct him here. I will set his ass straight. He’s a moron.

If you are propositioning me, I respectfully decline.

(Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

This is against Federal Law. Yes, a certain % can be assumed by the Employer and IRS (it’s often 8%), but a timely kept log will supersede that assumption.

Truth be told, this thread is a harsh reminder to me of the great costs involved in pre-prepared food, so my reaction is the opposite. I *really *need to stop eating out so much.

Exactly. I don’t understand why this board enables racism, bigotry, or sexism. I don’t give a fuck how upset you are, that type of shit is not acceptable.

And, honestly, look at all the stuff in his post that isn’t bad at all. A guy is saying a word wrong. A guy has gold teeth and fancy rims. A guy is at home living with his mother. A guy is doing the customary “Who is it” greeting at the door.

The only legitimate gripes in the OP are about tipping or the naked kid. (The robbery is not in the OP, though that’s legit, too.)

I’m afraid you don’t know what any of those words mean. You should stop using them in an inappropriate context.

Okay kiddies, let’s put on our learning helmets and stop eating the paste for a moment. Askthepizzaguy is going to lay down the Straight Dope with regards to big scary words like “racism”, “bigotry”, and “sexism”.

Did you know?

Criticism of someone who is a different race or gender than yourself is not automatically either racism or sexism, no matter how insulting it may be.

Why is that, Askthepizzaguy?

Racism is a criticism or negative stereotype (or any stereotype) of an entire group of people that share certain genetic characteristics that we [mistakenly] call a “race” of people, and the criticism or stereotype must also suggest that all or most of that group share that same trait.

In short bus language, that means criticizing someone as being inept, stupid, or lazy, because of their “race”, rather than **simply because they’re being a moron.
**
One is okay, the other is not.

What’s the difference?

Tommy said that Bobby was a lazy asshole. This is an insulting criticism.

What color was Bobby’s skin? We don’t know, and we shouldn’t care. This criticism, insulting though it may be, was not racist.

Tommy said to Bobby that “his people” were all lazy assholes. This is bigotry, and it also could be racism.

Why is that bigotry? It is because Tommy is not just insulting Bobby, but everyone in “his” group of people, usually referring to race. This means that without knowing the vast majority of the people in Bobby’s group, likely meaning racial group, Tommy has insulted them simply because they were of that race, and he’s specifically stating that they are all a certain way.

It’s prejudiced because it judges someone before you know them.

It’s bigoted because it implies an entire group of people is “lesser” than Tommy, which means we might infer from that, Tommy might have a supremacist viewpoint.

It’s racist if Tommy meant racial group when he said that. It could be homophobic rather than racist if he were referring to all gays. It’s not fully clear from the context.

Such criticisms are not okay, because they are outrageously unfair (criticizing someone before you know them) and ignorant of facts (obviously not everyone of a certain race is a lazy asshole).

Why is it okay to criticize and insult a person for being a lazy asshole?

Because this is the Pit, where such criticisms and insults belong.

Don’t whine about insulting criticisms here. Feel free to call me bigoted, but be aware I’m going to call you a moron for doing so, because you don’t know the meaning of the effing word.

Does that mean I can insult someone who can afford $50 bucks for a pizza and then tries to tell me they have no money for the tip? Yes.

Even if they’re black? Yes. Since when was that a problem, asshole? Which one of us has an actual issue with race, I wonder?

Does that mean I can insult someone who hands me money out of their underwear, which is a gross and disgusting thing to do? Yes. Even if she’s a big, black woman? Yeah. It doesn’t make it any more or less gross, but it is still gross. And while I’m insulting her for doing a gross thing, I’m also going to point out that I really don’t want to see that, because it’s very unattractive.

Is that sexist? No, it’s criticizing grossness.

If you don’t understand that, then you are a dumbfuck.

Class dismissed.

Here’s the tl;dr version:

Seriously, askthepizzaguy, there’s no need to parse every word of what you posted and explain exactly why it’s “right.” That takes all the fun out of posting a Pit rant.*

If you’re not a bigoted, racist, sexist asshole, the totality of your SDMB contributions should make that apparent.

  • To say nothing of how much fun it sucks out of reading one.

Clarification was needed for some people. I think AskThePizzaGuy was entirely justified in helping BigT understand the difference between the original post, and a racist post. He was providing a greatly needed service.

Helping BigT understand is always justified.
