You drink tea. Actually tea is the most important part of the meal. The Cantonese when going to dim sum, go to “yim cha”, or drink tea. The eating is incidental to this. Whereas in America we go to Dim Sum, chow down, and leave, in Hong Kong they relax a lot more, read a paper, drink some tea, eat a few bites, etc… That’s what people say, anyway. I’m going to Hong Kong next month, so I’ll see what’s really going on.
As for Dim Sum in St. Louis, my parents just told me they went to one a few months ago. I’ll ask them where it is. St. Louis probably only has one or two places you can go.
I feel like I was just kicked in the stomach. The Yank Sing on Battery is (I guess was) one of my very favorite restaurants in the world. My wife and I live in Los Angeles, but travel to the Bay Area to visit relatives four or five times a year. And we always extend our trip to allow for at least one lunch at Yank Sing.
The chicken and mushroom dumplings are fantastic, but not as good as the chicken and snowpeas that they no longer make (at least they weren’t available at my last visit). Man, I love that spot.
Which of the others is the best location? Do they compare? I still can’t believe it!
