I propose new / replacement non animated smilies

Hey, you don’t have to tell me. I’m one of the puking smiley’s most adamant opponents, although I seem to recall finding one that was decently tasteful…I still dislike the idea in general as much as anyone, though.

I like the “embarrassed” one from there. And “freaked” is pretty cute, but our  works pretty well already.

For “embarrassed”, I like:this guy and this guy.

Sorry to post again so quick, but I saw this and think it’s the neatest thing ever.

Hmm. To follow the currency vein, the “alternative lifestyle” smiley could be a $3 bill.

Hey, I like that! Very cute.

Say hello to eng101, downs, and v.

I’m just going to take a moment to say that I miss Smashie.

There are some kick-ass smilies on that page. I was a lurker at the time but if I remember correctly they were all designed by SDMB members. We should be able to vote on some of those again.

I think those are Something Awful smilies.

Sorry for the followup.

Why not use the standard vBulletin 3.5 smilies, maybe add a few that vBulletin admins have created on their own for free use by others, and maybe mod others? You can use Photoshop to change colors so the grin remains green instead of the standard yellow, but otherwise the design scheme of all the smilies will be consistent, so the board won’t look cluttered.

Not odd. How about, “Because animated smilies are annoying and they distract from the argument, rather than illuminate”.

I respectfully disagree. Emoticons are intended to compensate for the absence of tone of voice in a written medium. Traditionally, this problem was corrected with careful editing and, in the case of letters, by waiting a day before submitting one’s thoughts to the postal system.

Emoticons, however cutesy, provide a useful shortcut.
Within the context of fighting ignorance, the purpose of an emoticon is as a softener. For example, sarcasm often appears overly harsh in print, so Mr rolleyes was invented. Dubious, in turn, softens rolley.

Similarly Mr. Smack! conveys embarrasment better than the orange fellator.

I object the graphical expressions of nausau as they convey “Neener-neener”: they are self-indulgent expressions, as opposed to courteous softeners.

What we need, methinks, is an improved winky. My preferred name for it would be :bemused: .

Finally, any vote should include the option, “None of the above.” (Also, I have a fondness of approval voting, to the extent practical.)

I don’t like the idea of a puke smilie. As an alternative, here’s something I created that conveys a similar message without resorting to graphical depictions of regurgitated bodily fluids:

My yuck smilie

It is magnificent, no?

Yes!

Hah! Your irony is quite clever, but I am too wise to be fooled by such an obvious slap in the face! Fine, you do not appreciate my art! I see. It is too sophisticated for your common bourgeois taste! I am not offended. I feel only pity for you, Philistine!

My only gripe is that there is no twirls moustache in an evil manner emoticon.

Or a “Mwah-hah-hah” smilie rubbing his hands together with an evil grin. He should probbaly have a Vandyke too.

Quite right. Is there any reason we can’t use smilies used by other boards? I can’t exactly see Lowtax sending Leonard J. Crabs after us for borrowing some emoticons.

Besides, eng101 is such a great fit for the SDMB.

Introducing “freaked”, the newest in my line of high quality smilie candidates. This smilie is useful for indicating stress, frustration, anxiety, or too much caffeine:

Freaked

Based on emotions expressed in this thread and others, it seems likely that some previously-used smilies will become no longer available. Admins: Is there any way that old smilies can still be available to the page-rendering software but not selectible by users for new posts? Otherwise, old threads may be altered from their original intent by emoticons no longer displayable.
