I work IT for a school district. The Principal of our high school was in the room talking to my manager when my phone rings. I answer it and say, “This is (Insert Name).” I always answer my work phone this way. The woman on the phone says, “HELLO HELLO?” and I then repeat my greeting. The woman says “HELLO?” again. I say, quite loudly, “HELLO, THIS IS (INSERT NAME).” She then grunts really loud and says, “I just took a shit and can’t get it out, can you help me?”
I was shocked. My only response was to hang up and pick my jaw up off the floor.
I tried to find out who it was but our VoIP call accounting software didn’t record the phone number because the prankster had their number blocked.
Ooo, I like to have fun with those people. They want you to be shocked so you have to throw something at them they won’t expect. Here’s how the conversation would have went had this person called me:
Them: “I just took a shit and can’t get it out, can you help me?”
Me: “Try using your teeth. Always works for me.”
Nine times out of ten they’ll hang up before you do.
I wish I had thought of something like that. I’m not much of a morning person and it was waaay too early for me to make up some smart retort. That’s the problem with prank callers, they’re too inconsiderate to wait and call around noon.
Crikey! I was knocked out of bed once by a prankster at 7am once; I was so sleepy I was actually attempting a civilised conversation with this prat (he was telling me he could see me, could see what I was wearing, and I was yawning and saying, ‘Uh huh, right, hmmm.’)
Then I caught sight of the clock and exclaimed, ‘You rang at 7am with a prank call?! Whatever happened to 2am?’
Lately I’ve had someone who was ringing me during the day, and not saying anything (although I can hear background noises, that ‘twisty’ plastic noise when someone shifts the phone in his hand, etc). When I was wee, if you didn’t ring off a call, the other person’s line remained open. I hope this is still true in the States, cos the last time this person rang, I put ‘My Fair Lady’ on repeat play on the sound system, and placed the phone next to the speaker.
