The vet thinks we got it all by amputating the toe all the way; the third bone only showed signs of deterioration on one end so by removing the entire bone we probably came into the clear. Honestly, though, we dicussed this with my parents and we’re probably not going to put her under for surgery again if it comes back. Like I said before, she has Cushing syndrome, where the life expectancy after diagnosis is approximately 3-4 years and she was diagnosed about 1,5 years ago. Also, Schnauzers generally live about 12-14 years. So we’re at the point where she’s nearing the end of her “natural” lifespan *and *the disease lifespan…
As long as she seems happy and lively we’ll carry on with what we’re doing right now for the Cushing (one pill a day and twice-yearly control testing) but I think adding much more other medication and/or surgery to that is too much for an old dog. If the cancer comes back it’ll be more a question of keeping her as comfortable as possible for as long as possible and then putting her to sleep when it starts to affect her badly enough (and crying about it for two days).
