There it was-rusted out, belching blue smoke-with the Maserati TRIDENT logo in the little porthole rear windows! What a joke! This thing was just a “K” body car with a few ornament stuck on-what was the “Maserati” schtick? Did they think that you could turn a cheap , low end sedan into an Italian luxury car by sticking some labels on it?
At any rate , anybody know how many of these things Chrysler made? And, what was the fate of them?
Well, in fairness it also had really nice leather seats and a bitchin’ audio system.
Anyway, Chrysler sold about 7,500 of them and cancelled the partnership after three years.
They seem to be alive and well, in various states of beauty in NorthEast Ohio. I’ve seen them in very well cared for condition, and beater condition. One of the nicest I’ve seen is a maroon one owned by an older lady who comes in to work all the time.
I remember those, the K car by Maserati came out about the same time as the ‘Cavalier’ by Cadilac. Rather than make a car to compete with the BMW 3 series and the Benz, they both just stuck $500 worth of badging and trim on a 15 thousand dollar car, renameplated it and tried to sell it for $30k.
Two of the worst cars ever made.
Also known as the Cadillac Cimarron. Actually nothing wrong with the Cimarron that couldn’t have been fixed with a better engine, suspension, steering, braking, interior trim…
I bet that Maserati didn’t do 185…
Kilometers, maybe!
I remember that abortion, known as the Cadillac “Cimarron”-what a piece of garbage. It was just a gussied up Cavalier, and underpowered to boot.GM really wrecked the Cadillac brand with this POS. This wasn’t all, though-years later, they brough over an Opel SENAOR (Germany) and called it a “Catera”-God knows where they got the name. That car was a flop too.
It was actually a “J” body. Believe it or not most of the body parts for this car were produced in Italy. I shit you not.
My mom has one - a Chrysler Maserati. Cream colored with blonde leather. She loves it, but doesn’t drive it much. The leather’s starting to look a bit worn, but other than that, it’s in great shape. Not sure I’d want one, though.
