‘Stew Smith’ - AKA Robert Williams. I saw this guy in the movie, and thought… ‘Wow, he must’ve had a career… he’s got just the right demeanor for screwball comedy, and exudes a Bing Crosby-like charisma.’
Then I check IMDB - and find out he died of appendicitis that same year.
He was terrific, in a Jimmy Stewart/Lee Tracy kind of way, wasn’t he? He did some B’way shows and a handful of movies in 1930–31, then—bang. Dead. It was very easy to die young back then.
(Wasn’t Jean Harlow adorable in that movie? Her first comedy role!)
You know, she’s a great light comedienne from the little I’ve seen of her (3 movies so far)… and she’s quite good at putting out a sultry vibe… but I honestly think she’s not all that pretty. Her face is… misshapen, somehow. Maybe I’m crazy.
I actually used to belong to the Platinum Blonde fan club! (OH the shame! But, I was very young, and Mark Holmes was one of my first crushes). Looking back, maybe I had a crush on him since he looked so much like a woman. Hmm, interesting, maybe I’m finding the roots of my lesbianism [/end hijack]
Oh, she wasn’t a great beauty—she had a weak chin, heavy brow and kinda big nose. But the cutest smile ever, and she was a bang-up comedienne. Shame about Robert Williams—I’ve seen him in Rebound and The Common Law, too, and he was reliably good.
