The Conqueror

Kull the Conquoror.
Better than nothin’.

Did you approve of Conan the Barbarian?

I can quote it line-by-line. Voices, accents and all. Got the movie on DVD and I have the soundtrack on CD.

Yeah, I hated that film.

Oh, and I have to disagree - nothing may have been better than Kull the Conqueror - it may have been a lot better…

Only Sorbo came out of that one with his career intact.

Depends on your definition of “career.” Then again, many actors would tell you that starring in a reasonably successful series of cheesy little sci-fi cable TV shows is better than waiting tables.

I kind of liked The Conqueror, though it is the kind of “liking” one spares for one’s favorite 1950s William Beaudine western, or one’s favorite Beach Party movie. It really comes across like a western in which the principals are confused, and dressed like Mongols instead of cowboys. John Wayne is hilarious; instead of his usual casual “Yeah, I’m the Duke, and this is me acting,” he is actually TRYING to act in this movie, with some hilarious consequences. If you ever wanted to see the exact limits of the Duke’s thespian talents, this is the movie to see.

Putting him in scenes with persons who COULD act was even funnier.

And I could watch Susan Hayward read the phone book, for potato’s sake. Rrrowf!

Even stranger is the fact that John Wayne actually wanted to star in this movie. He went out of his way to get the part. It is impossible to see why he wanted to do this though.

For those itching to see the movie, it’s coming on AMC on Sep. 1 at 10:45 am Mountain Time.
