My left wrist has been hurting like mad for days, particularly if my hand is bent back or I apply pressure to my hand. And now the tendon running down the top of my hand from my forefinger is burning like bejesus. Typing this is really painful, and the pain keeps waking me up in the middle of the night.
Has anyone on the SDMB ever had this, and if so, what alleviated it?
But if this has been bothering your for awhile, you should see a physician. If it is RSI, he will have several options that will range from something as simple as a wrist splint (to keep your wrist immobile to let it heal) and anit-inflamatory drugs to Carpal Tunnel surgery. This, of course, is the extreme measure, but I have many friends that have been through it and have lost the numbness in their hands and pain in their wrists.
Thanks, Dragwyr. I think my 8,000-odd posts to the SDMB might have something to do with it too… I rely on using a keyboard to make a living, so I really need this fixed. I’ll see a doctor on Monday.
as i sit here, i’m wearing a bandage on my right wrist for support. about 10 years ago i screwed the 2 tendons on the inside side of my wrist from playing water polo. it was so bad at the time, i couldnt even stretch my right arm out as it felt like somebody pulling them out and snapping tham like rubber bands.
i had physio on it and all sorts, and the end result is every time it gets cold, ie now, i can feel the scar tissue over the top of it, like a pins & needles type throb.
pushing a mouse about all day doesnt help one little bit. go to a doctor, they should be able to recommend a decent physiotherapist for it.
get a silicon wrist support if your on a computer all day. it helps.
I have two silicon wrist supports and an ergonomic keyboard already, which is why I’m surprised that this is happening. Unless of course this was a falling-up-stairs injury that I’d forgotten about - I fall up the stairs quite a lot - ever since I was a kid.
jjimm, unless the wrist supports help keep your wrists straight, they may not be helping you. You need to keep the back of your hands level with your arms, not bent upward at all.
You do need to check in with a doctor. You can try a splint (keeps your wrists from bending upwards).
Icing and ibuprofen can help too. Sometimes when my wrists would hurt, I would tilt my keyboard so that the top edge (the part furthest away from me) was slightly below the nearest edge. That also forced me to keep my wrists straight, or bent slightly down. Of course this presupposes that you have a workstation that lets you make that kind of adjustment…
OK, what I’ve done is added height to my left-hand wrist support, and folded down the little legs on the fancy keyboard. My wrist is now angled downwards rather than up. And now I think about it, this only started when I got the fancy keyboard, which does seem to cause my wrist to angle upwards.
