I love my bellyring and I’m pretty damn sure I don’t have self-esteem issues.
[A Mockingbird Piercing Safety Tip]
Before getting pierced, ask to see the autoclave they use and the records if you question whether it is just for show.
A autoclave is an essential part of keeping the piercing shop and the tools used on a hygenic level that should be expected of any place doing minor surgical procedures.
If they don’t have one or the logs aren’t up to date or ‘they can’t find them,’ leave. Find a shop that uses one and maintains a clean and sterile atmosphere.

Well, while you may eat crayons, it doesn’t seem to affect your sanity or self-esteem.
On the other hand, rampant huffing of paint causes sweeping generalizations which condemns a larger segment of the population than thought of by the huffer.
Remember: huffing not only causes your lungs to look like they were redecorated by the cast of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but it makes one have an intellectual dismount from self-expression like Howard Dean*.
*While I am a socialist, I am a registered democrat to vote in primaries, and I quite liked Dean, and for more than his stance on same sex marriage.
Up next. The eye tatoo.
ow. ow. ow. ow. owwwwwwwwww.
Alternatively, ask them to use a disposible needle and require them to open the sterile wrap while you watch. Also a good idea is to plan on visiting the shop at least twice – once to take the tour and ask questions about there sterile practices, what they recommend for aftercare, etc etc. Then come back LATER to do the piercing, if you were satisfied with their answers the first time.
I ended getting my navel ring at the first place I checked out (on a second trip), but I was also very impressed with the place and the staff… they let me see the piercing room in the back (looked and smelled as antiseptic as a hospital room, complete with bench with a roll of clean paper to go over it), and answered all of my questions very knowledgeably. I also noticed that they used latex gloves constantly, even though they weren’t piercing anyone at the time… they wouldn’t touch any of the jewelry without them, and changed gloves when they moved to another instrument/display.
My belly ring was done with a gun.
Why? Cause I was in a small town (Antigonish) and both they and I didn’t know any better.
Fortunately, it turned out just fine.
I occasionally get comments on my earrings (6 in right, 4 in left) but most people don’t even notice. I still think I’d like to get my nose pierced, but I’m not sure how it would go over at the office.
Are you considering a nostril piercing or a septum?
You’re not referring to the time I stuck crayons up my nose, are you?
Homer?
Am I the only one who read this and thought “What calibre?” with the mental image of a gunshot wound?
“Yes, I’d like my nose pierced, please.” BLAM! “Danx, do oo hab chaj fo a $50?”
I’ve heard of young women showing up in Hollywood with stars in their eyes, but I thought it was just a figure of speech.
It makes me glad that when I was young, all I had to do to shock grownups was grow my hair really long.
After all, that is why people get pierced.
Whoops, I didn’t even think about that, my bad.
Nostril.
And I guess I should have been a titch more specific…it was an ear-piercing gun.
Wait - that’s no better…
OK, it would be presumptuous of me to state that everyone who gets pierced is doing it for that reason.
But do you really doubt that it’s true for some?
Some people go for radical Christianity or Republicanism to shock their liberal/permissive families… there’s always a percentage that does it for such reasons. To pose it as the standard is patronizing and insults people who did it for personal reasons.
Not to be a thread killer, but the young lady doesn’t have the eye decoration inserted under the cornea as stated in the link; rather, it is under the conjunctiva.
Still icky though.
Wow.
I am really glad my husband doesn’t feel this way. He thinks me having my belly button pierced is pretty sexy. No, I do not have any self-esteem problems thank you very much. I am a very successful Sr Systems Engineer and project lead.
I am truly amazed at how shallow some people’s minds are though. I guess we should all be cookie cutter in our looks and behavior?
How do you feel about ear piercings? I guess you would really have a problem in some south Africa countries where they beautify themselves with total body tattoos and piercings.
Perhaps you should be a little more open minded and not stereotype people you do not know, based on the things they find enjoyment in.
