I want a simple music playing android app that will play MP3 files. I can't find it

I updated my smartphone, this is the 2nd smartphone I’ve ever had (technically I had an ipod touch before that, so I’ve had 3 smart devices).

All my other ones had an obvious, and easy to use music app that was built in. This one (samsung galaxy J3) does not. It has musical apps but they are garbage.

I tried looking online for info, but the best recommended ones suck too.

I would really like a music app that can do the following:

[ul]
[li]Search through my SD card to find all my MP3 files[/li][li]Organize my music by artists, then sub-organize the music by album (several just lump all songs by an artist together rather than organize by album)[/li]
[li]Have the music in each album organized by the order it appears in the album, instead of alphabetically. [/li]
[li]Have the artists organized in an easy to scroll through list that I can just scroll up and down through. [/li]
[li]No ads (having to wait for a 30 second ad everytime I open my music folder isn’t something I want, I’d rather just pay for the app than do that). [/li]
[li]has a repeat option so I can listen to the same song on repeat. [/li]
[li]No streaming services or any other bloatware I don’t need (I use pandora for streaming, I don’t need any other services). Just a list of artists for whom I have MP3 files, then subcategorized by album, then having the album songs listed in order with a repeat song option. [/li][/ul]

I can’t find anything, the 4ish apps I’ve tried are all lacking in at least one of the areas. This phone is new, but I have checked and I don’t see a simple, easy to use music app. Granted, maybe I need to do more experimenting but I can’t find this. I’d prefer a free app but I will pay since this is something I really need.

VLC

I installed it on my Moto x phone last weekend. No ads and it works great.

I’ve used VLC on my PC since 2008. Videos and music too. Very glad its available for Android phones too.

As a recent convert from iOS, I have been happy with RocketPlayer Android Music Player | Android Music App | JRT Studio

They also make a utility to sync iTunes so that I didn’t have to redo my playlists or ratings.

I’m not sure if it searches through the SD card for music, since I used the sync utility to port all my music from iTunes onto the SD card.

It does meet your needs for artist and album viewing, no ads and repeat capability. I don’t think it has any of the bloatware that you talk about, but it could be there somewhere. (Like you, I use other apps for that stuff when I want it.)

This isn’t exactly what you describe, but you might like it even better. It uses your own folder tree for organizing your music any way you want. It’s called, creatively enough, Folder Player:

Seconding VLC. I have a SAMSUNG galaxy S5

I also like rocket player. I got it because i keep music in iTunes on my Mac, and this pulls over my play lists. But i like it because it is simple and doesn’t go out to the web to look for music there, or for ads, or whatever. No ads. (I might have paid a few bucks to lose the ads, i don’t remember.) It sorts songs within an album by track number, not alphabetically.

I just use Google Play Music. It does everything you are asking for. It does have a streaming option, but it is just that, an option. Otherwise, VLC is a good app also, I just prefer Play Music.

Seconding Play Music. It’ll find the music on your phone regardless of what folders you have it in. There is also a widget you can put on your home screen so you can play music without opening the app.

I use NRG Player. Its not perfect, but it pretty good (per your stated preferences) I tried VLC and while it was ok, I couldn’t figure it out well enough to get it to play more than one song vs playing a playlist.

The ONE single aggravation that I have with every single freaking music player I’ve tried is that they all include my custom ringtones in the master music library.

freaking cat! stay off my keyboard

I think if you want no ads in your player, you’re gonna have to pay for it, I dunno if this is true with google play as I have an illogical and unreasonable bias against google and limit all google apps on my phone as much as Drone functionality will allow.

Google Play Music has no ads.

But Google Play music has an annoying tendency to want you to store your music in the cloud, and reminds you of that from time to time. At least, I found it very annoying, and stopped using it for that reason.

It doesn’t do that on my phone and never has. I have it set on “downloaded only” and I don’t get nagged at all.

Of the ones listed so far in this thread, I’ve tried them and I think I like VLC the best. However Rocket player is pretty much the same quality, I think I just prefer VLC. I’ve had problems with google player since they are always trying to get me to do stuff other than play my own music. Thanks for all the input.

Same here. Never any reason to take it off of Downloaded Only, since I never stream music. I only listen to my own stuff I have put on my SD card in the phone. And it never nags me to put stuff on the cloud in that mode.

Also, the only time I even open the Play Music app is to select an album or playlist. Then I close the app and use a widget to play the music.
