I want an $800 chair

Since I spend so much time sitting in front of my computer I was thinking of getting a really good chair.

Anyone have or use on of them Herman Miller Aeron chairs? I see them all the time, but I was wondering if any Dopers out there have any personal experience in terms of their long term comfort and durability. I’ve sat in one briefly and it seemed ok.

Here’s a link if you’re wondering what an $800 chair looks like.

Now I’d like one, too, after reading about them. Looks like they sell on ebay for about half price. But I can’t imagine shipping fees.

Mmmmm…Aeron. I don’t own one, but I have had the pleasure of sitting in one. Unbelievable. The most comfortable seat EVER, bar none. I’ve been trying to justify buying one for a long, long time, but I just can’ t do it.

Just a suggestion for eBay - you might be able to get around shipping fees if you buy from a seller in your state.

I wanna sit in an $800 chair! pout

Oops, meant to say city. :o

We use them at work and they are very comfortable… don’t know that I’d spend quite so much money on one myself though. At home we use a Swiss Ball and have found it really comfy even for long periods… cost about £15 and has the added benefit of being [mother] Very Good for One’s Back [/mother]

Shipping should be about $50-$60. I’d say the chair is worth maybe $400-500. That’s not to say it’s not comfortable, cause it is. Best chair I’ve ever been in, at least. It’s just a overpriced a few hundered dollars. If you find a deal on it, and can afford it, go for it.

I have an Aeron chair which has become the most comfortable place for me to be in the waning months of my pregnancy. I didn’t pay for mine (the joys of being a telecommuter on the director level) but I would have. No question.

If you’ve got the dosh, go for it.

I know it’s not a computer chair, but this is the one I’m going to get when I get the chance: the Chair.

I beg your pardon but this is the real chair behind your chairEames chair

A couple of years ago my company bought Aeron chairs for everyone. And we haven’t gone out of business! Its great!

We’ve got Aerons at work (a public library… your tax dollars at work, natch.)

I suppose they’re reasonably comfortable, but they’re not exactly sturdy. Folks here are always accidentally snapping the knobs and levers off.

I had an Aeron for a while, and though they look cool, I don’t fit in them. It gave me pain in my lower back and shoulders. Though it had all sorts of adjustable crap attached to it none of that really helped with the places where I had problems with it. Several others in the office also wound up replacing theirs as they didn’t find them comfortable. Others swear by them.

Also, I found that the mesh that the seat is made out of is quite abrasive, and wears through clothing. A lot of people around here have towels or cloth over them. I have jeans that have developed “Aeron ass”, a much whiter rear end area that ends in a distinctive curve halfway down the thigh.

The best thing to do would be to find someplace that carries lots of different chairs and try them all out. The chair that I found to be the most comfortable for me turned out to be a deluxe metal/leather office chair circa 1955 that was in the cube of abandoned chairs in our office. It rocks, and I think it contains more steel than most modern cars.

I bought the Aeron a month ago and have shamlessly bragged about it ever since.

This is MY Aeron at my computer desk. Photographed yesterday.

I want a 1200 dollar chair. An oasis lazy boy chair. I just got a 61 inch tv and when I get the chair I will die a happy man. I think I will eventually succumb to starvation in the end…

You people and your $1200 chairs. HA! I say to you. [Crocodile Dundee] You call that a chair? THIS is a chair. [Crocodile Dundee]

I worry about the same thing. This is my Layzyboy TV watchin chair. Fairly cheap – $600 for chair and ottoman.

I suppose it’s time for Scylla to mention the CoUP
