I Was Wrong- There's a BIG Downside to Letting Tim Tebow start

Their what is pretty what to start with?

The Broncos defense is horrendous. They are 29th out of 32 teams in scoring defense. That’s bad.

Still better than last year though, when they were dead last in the NFL in both scoring defense and yards given up. Tebow was able to win back then too with essentially the worst team in football behind him.

“Sounds like a bad break for me I wasn’t killed!”

Yeah. Except he keeps winning.

I watched the entire game, and I am so happy not to be a Bronco fan. Tebow is so painful to watch. I kept thinking to myself, how in the world did this kid win in college? In fact, how did he get to start at Florida? He’s not a QB at all. He’s a halfback that takes snaps. But Florida gets some of the top recruits every year. Not one of those kids could beat Tebow out? I’m fascinated.

If the game wasn’t fixed, I don’t know what to say. Tebow is going to run. How the Jets let that final drive occur just blows my mind. It is like he is WILLING his team to win. And they have all swallowed the kool-aid. So, the other guys on the team believe in Tebow as well. It’s a monster feeding onto itself. What happens. though, if they start losing? Do the wheels come off? When someone finally points out that the emperor is naked, will we all get back to normal?

I watched him in college, and he had the worst delivery I’ve ever seen. EVER. And yet he won. Constantly. National Championship. Amazing.

On draft day, I couldn’t believe someone drafted him in the first round. First round! And they traded up to get him! Who did the Broncos think they were going to lose him to? I have no way of knowing, but if he didn’t go in Round 1, I’m guessing he’s probably still be around at the start of Round 4.

There is just nothing there.

2 passes complete last week - and a victory.

Tonight, he looked terrible as always when he was setting up to pass. But when he needed to… the final drive… he made it happen. I still have no idea how.

I don’t care much for the praying, but I guess it’s just as annoying as the goofy dances, flex poses, and whatever else football players do to celebrate…

One thing… if God is actually paying attention to this guy and helping him win, I am disappointed with God. There are a lot of other things going on that need his attention.

This can’t go on. It can’t. He’s awful. He cannot throw. A QB needs to throw, doesn’t he?

I am refusing to jump on the Tebow bandwagon… it’s on a collision course with something. I simply can’t believe he can get the Broncos to the playoffs.

If he does, I’ll be back. Eat my crow. But if he gets the Broncos in the playoffs, I’ll check my behind. Because monkeys will be flying out of my butt.

I think the band wagon is against Tebow no matter how many games he wins so you’re already on it.

Something I noticed on that final drive, and may be what’s happening (for now). He doesn’t really scramble around. He makes a pretty darn quick decision to run and I think it catches the defense out of position. Then, add in that’s he’s big and fairly fast… well … TDs happen.

I was amazed at every pass that was actually caught, tho. I would cringe when he pulls back his arm, cocks it, and stretches the rubber band tight.

But, he beat the Jets’ D. I gotta say, Wow.

They’ve been a ton better recently. Hell, the defense scored as many TD’s last night as Tebow did.

They held the Jets to 83 yards on 23 carries (less than 3 ypc) and 0 td’s.
They held the mighty Mark Sanchez to 250 yards and got a pick six on him.
They held the Jets to 21$ 3rd down efficiency, they had 3 sacks, and they forced 3 and recovered one fumble.

The Broncos defense won that game last night, pure and simple.

But that won’t stop the “he just wins” crap. It’s seriously frustrating.

In the games Tebow has “won” himself, the defense has given up 15, 10, 13, 10, and 24 points. That averages to 14.4 points per game, which would give them the #1 scoring defense in the NFL.

I love that the Broncos won last night. I dislike the Jets, I’m more than happy that they lost, I’m thrilled that Rex Ryan consistently gets embarrassed, and them having a defensive breakdown to give the Broncos the game makes me smile.

I also like Tebow, I think he’s a great kid, and he had an inspired last drive last night. Congrats to him.

But the Broncos aren’t winning because of Tebow. They’re winning despite him.

Who says? Anyway, last week’s 56 yard TD pass would suggest that he can throw, just not as well as other QBs.

That’s the trick, he’s primarily a runner. He’s really good at it, he averages 6 yards per rush. So you load up on the run to stop him and his option attack, and you allow the receivers man to man coverage that reduces the impact of his slow throwing motion.

I’d also point out that for all of his “bad” throwing, his career interception rate is 2.1%, and this year it’s 1.0%, both quite good numbers, and rather better than Orton’s 4.5% this year. Sure, balls thrown to the ground don’t get intercepted, but they also never turn into a pick-six, like the one Professional Quarterback Mark Sanchez threw last night.

Maybe I should start believing in this “God” stuff, because Tebow is apparently the luckiest SOB on the planet. He lucked into all his collegiate success, lucked into being a 1st round draft pick, and lucked into being given the starting job right when his team started playing better. Of course, HE doesn’t help them to play better they just happen to play better when he starts, total luck.

I couldn’t tell if NFL network is serious when they say there is something “magic” about Tebow. The guy threw for 100 yards last night. Dude just said that there is something special about him. I must be missing something.

Calvin playing Tebow/Hobbes

Not just you. Yet he is seemingly being treated as the new A-Rod.

This is hilarious, i hate the kid but watching a bad team with an utterly incompetent QB keep on winning is incredibly entertaining.

I was impressed when Tebow stepped in front of the receiver, intercepted Sanchez’s pass, and took it in for the touchdown. I also liked the fumble Tebow forced when he tackled McGahee, the 3 sacks he had, and the ten points he allowed.

On second look, I messed this up. The Broncos gave up 15, 24, 10, and 13 in games Tebow “won” all by himself. That averages to 15.5 points per game in those wins. Which drops them down to the #2 scoring defense in the NFL.

Luckiest guy in the world, just happened to get a chance to start when his defense finally starting playing well. Shit, his defense is allowing a paltry 21.4 points per game during his starts, way better than the league average of 22. Who wouldn’t win 4 of 5 games with such awesome defense behind him?

Defense doesn’t depend on Tebow’s performance at all, It’s not like the defense benefits when your QB throws 6 fewer interceptions in 5 games, right?

It certainly defies explanation but:

21 Broncos + Orton = Lose
21 Broncos + Tebow = Win

Yes, they went 3 & out a lot last night. A good team would have had a few more TDs against the Jets that showed up. And yes, Denver’s defense did some good stuff that contributed significantly to the win. But I think what’s happening is the QB is a good, unpretentious guy who just inspires those around him. Even though he doesn’t play at the same time as the defense, they can still feel better about their jobs if they feel like part of something positive and big.

Did you see the stats? They’re right there for you. In games Tebow has won, the Broncos have the second best scoring defense in the NFL.

Are you going to credit Tebow for the loss to the Lions like you do for the wins? Was that Tebow out there giving up 376 total yards, 3 td’s in the air, and not gettting any turnovers?

When Denver’s defense plays great, they win. When they don’t, they lose. And Tebow doesn’t play defense.

Never said that. That’s kinda like the “luckiest QB ever” strawman you insist on building.

Tebow has protected the ball much better, which, in turn, has helped the defense. But it’s inane to insist that Tebow has a huge enough effect on the defense to make that big of difference.

ETA: Just to head off more strawmen: Tebow is playing fine for him and is certainly contributing to the wins. But he’s not the sole reason the Broncos are winning.

I was impressed when Orton started the season 1-4 with his skillful play, and was replaced by a totally crappy quarterback that has gone 4-1 despite the trading of the team’s best receiver.

None of your sarcasm can get past that fact, no matter how hard you try.

Orton sucked. He turned the ball over too much and couldn’t move the ball when the team needed him to. Tebow has been much better at protecting the ball, running the ball, and taking advantage of his opportunities.

None of which changes the facts that football is a team game, or that the Broncos defense has been playing very well in the games they’ve won with Tebow at QB. Some of that is due to Tebow protecting the ball, but nowhere near all of it.

Protecting the ball matters. Take a look at Orton’s losses.

-3pts 3TO, -3pts 2TO, -26pts 4TO, -5pts 1TO.

How many of these games would be wins if some of those turnovers didn’t happen?
Tebow’s wins

+3pts 1TO, +14pts 0TO, +7pts 0TO, +4pts 1TO

Throw an extra interception or two into those games, how many do the Broncos lose?

Yes, it’s not ALL Tebow, but I think there’s a pretty sizable group who have it out for the guy, who are convinced he can’t succeed, and are looking for any reason to downplay his contribution to winning.

Sure it does. I never said any different.

I agree. I’m not one of those guys. I like Tebow, I’m happy he’s winning, he’s fun to watch run the ball, I’m thrilled he stuffed it in Rex Ryan and the Jets’ piehole, and I hope he has much success in his life.

But he’s not the only reason the Broncos are winning. The largest single reason the Broncos are winning is that their defense is playing very well by getting turnovers, big stops, sacks, and limiting time of possession. Tebow certainly gets credit for not turning the ball over and being able to run, but unless that defense plays well, the Broncos aren’t winning those games.
