I love that song! A friend put it on a mix tape for me back right after the album was released but didn’t say where it was from. It took me years to track it down and get the Mike Oldfield CD. Have you heard Maggie Reilley’s own version? It’s nice too. If not, and you want to hear it, or if those folks who have never heard the version you’re talking about want to hear it, I stuck both of them on the end of a playlist of streaming audio songs I play at work. You’ll have to scroll all the way down to the bottom (they’re songs 245 and 246) and double-click to start the songs. Unfortunately, I don’t think the playlist/player shows up in Firefox. I have IE at work. If you have Firefox let me know. I can PM you the direct link to hear Maggie’s version.
Many Mike songs are stuck in my head. QE2 from the QE2 CD, Sentinel from TB2, Top of the Morning from TB3, and even the opening guitar riff and final drums on Amarok. My Doper name does not come from the album, but I thought it was cool when the album came out.
Thanks for the link. We’re not really allowed to stream at work but I figured a small audio stream will do no harm. Looks like there’s a lot of stuff on your list that I would like.
Also what’s the story behind that online music playing thingy?
You mean the player itself? I’ll try to remember where I got it. I was excited to find it because most of the players I’ve been using (such as the one on this page) have a song limit, whereas this one, as you can see, hasn’t a limit I’ve found yet. I keep adding songs, such as some I just ripped from Everything But The Girl and The Cocteau Twins, and it hasn’t broken yet.
I downloaded the player from wherever I did get it from (in a zip file which I extracted and put on my local machine), then re-uploaded the various parts to my own web site’s server. I ripped the mp3s from my own collection, uploaded them to my web site (so I’m not using anyone else’s bandwidth), then built the playlist using the player’s format. I can’t get more specific until I get home from work and can access the files. I just wanted my own music to listen to at work, though I had to keep them all fairly mellow, so no Danielle Dax or the rockier or more electronic weirdness by Happy Rhodes. I put the versions of “To France” at the end so they wouldn’t accidentally play at work.
Hmmm, I thought I had the new version of Firefox. I’ll check when I get home and let you know. I just know that I was getting a blank page when I tried to check if a new playlist I built was working, while it showed up and worked fine in IE.
I woke up dreaming about Steven C. Chapman’s I Will Be Herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEwzUZET-RQ The only difference between my dream/waking earworm & the youtube is that my version had only a piano & a bass.
I’ve wanted to learn to play the piano for as long as I can remember (I’m 55, so it’s been a long time). I love classical music (see my age, above…Liberace (sp?) was popular when I was at an impressionable age), and would love to learn to play piano music by classical composers (up to, including, & surpassing Ubie Blake & Scott Joplin?)
