No, I want everyone not to bully. Name-calling is aggressive yet useless.
Thst said, I’m done.

Yeah..but we’re not. Both sides are not addressed in your title, so what names do you what MAGA Sympathizers to quit using? Also, do you think name calling in Germany during WWII on behalf of both sides was a major problem then?
It is so cute that you think writing MAGAt anonymously on a liberal to progressive leaning board is “fighting”! Awww. ![]()
It is either an insult that means something and we shouldn’t use it, or it is a mere trifle that should be laughed at.
Pick a lane.
After being sprayed with bear spray, having family/friends threatened/assaulted/kidnapped/killed for no good reason… after having paramilitary thugs roam freely after running our cars off of our roads (and now kicking down our doors without warrants)… we have to ‘mind our language’ in The Pit so WH Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Betsy DeVos don’t have to clutch their pearls at the weekly DAR club luncheon and bridge game?
Yeah, no.
“Put forth your hands, children. It’s time for Sister Mary to beat your knuckles for harsh language and low morale.”
Excluded middle. It is a stupidity that can annoy like a fly buzzing every so often distracting from l conversations about serious threats we are facing across the world from the rise of MAGA here and somewhat similar movements rising in other parts of the world. Not worth getting the swatter out over.
That’s my lane.
The time for a polite and civilized conversation about this authorized terrorism was…on second thought, that time never existed.
What they call us, what they do to us, what they would do to us without hesitation if they could-This is so far up the list of “annoyances” that calling them names that aren’t even obscene isn’t even on page 4,723 of that list.
Then at what time during WWII was it o.k. for the opposition to call Nazis “Ratzis”? That should be more equivalent to the current situation.
Leaders should have decorum. And some amount of self control.
Our leaders don’t. So slugs crawl out from under rocks and bellow insults.
People on opposing sides should not sink to that level.
I was appalled when the Mayor of Minneapolis said, on camera said “get the fuck outta here”(paraphrased). I know, I know he was speaking from extreme emotion and concern. I just think he should not have sunk to that level. He could have said almost anything else with the same emotion and conveyed his meaning.
It’s almost like “our thoughts and prayers’ it’s become so common and irritating.
A “Fuck you” or “get the fuck out” should be held back til there’s no other choice.
MAGAt is a very mild pejorative, actually. They self identify as MAGA. So it’s a simple to use. And everyone knows what you mean.
I’d like to find the storehouse where they keep MAGA hats with a sharpie and write “T’ on the end.
I don’t like bullying and just nasty unruly behavior but I don’t think we should be doormats, either.
You have to choose what you are comfortable saying or writing on a sign or clothing. And live with your choices.
Where’s the middle ground, though?
And – if the authoritarianism, totalitarianism, or fascism (worth mentioning that historian, Heather Cox Richardson recently started using those terms, saying that the recent ICE shooting pretty much marked the crossing of that line) continues apace – how will we count on the people who are strongly bothered by language to put themselves in harm’s way to preserve democracy and/or save their neighbors?
Basically, back to the Naomi Shulman quote I posted above.
That would be never because they don’t think of themselves as the bad guys. Nobody does, really, but they have elevated it into an art form.
It wasn’t the Left that turned political opponents into political enemies.
And I’m not good at wordplay, and wondered why the “it’s a person” form of maga was magat…
I don’t care for equating people with vermin. I think that leads to things like shoving people in ovens. But I’m good with “maga sympathizer”, “evil person”, “bigoted asshole”, and many other human-style epithets.
In the beginning I was against it. My feelings changed right around the time they continued to support Trump after he opened a concentration camp in Florida. I’ll think it through some after reading all this, but I don’t really see a non-offensive alternative that rolls off the tongue and/or keyboard. I’m not typing a 23 letter phrase every time I want to refer to these folks.
And really, complaining about the use of “MAGAt” is the same as calling them “snowflakes” isn’t it? They really hate anyone getting butt-hurt over politically incorrect speech. So I’m guessing they are fine with it and take a “sticks and stones” attitude.
The one thing MAGA seems to really, really hate is being mocked. You can call them evil, but don’t make fun of them.
I am actually somewhat sympathetic to the OP. I used to get annoyed when people referred to George Bush, Jr. as “Shrub.” Oh! I also hate seeing people type “cow-orker.” It grates on my nerves.
I associate it with MAGA nut Scott Adams of Dilbert infamy.
This term was popularized by Scott Adams (the creator of Dilbert)
And this old FQ thread from 22 years ago:
I think it was just a reference to co-workers infected with dipshititus, and not all of them.
On behalf of maggot-Americans, I agree that it’s Very Unfair™ to associate them with Trunt voters.
It wasn’t the Left that turned political opponents into Shooting Targets, Punching Bags, people whom you can road rage and hit with your cars, etc. etc…
All of which is covered by “enemies.”
