Today is one of those beautiful days that we get here in LA: if I squint through the smog, I can see snow-capped mountains to the north, or the sun glinting off the ocean to the south. The sky is blue, the air is soft, the sun is warm.
I am stuck indoors, of course. But what’s this in today’s mail? The summer schedule for the Hollywood Bowl! If I were rich, I would go to the Hollywood Bowl every night. Even when they were closed. I would bring my own picnic basket and my own wine, and sit in the sunlight and the moonlight.
This summer they’re doing Stephen Sondheim; Camelot; and the Sing Along Sound of Music. Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan will be there (together), and Etta James and Brian Wilson (not together). Hawaiian music, and Woody Allen music, and video games music (I kid you not!). Wagner and Ravel and Tchaikovsky and Gershwin. I don’t even like everyone who’s performing at the Bowl. But it’s the Bowl!
Is there any place better on earth than the Hollywood Bowl during the summer?
