I would like to bring this to your attention

THE MODERATORS DO NOT GET PAID. There’s no implication, it’s truth. Yes, they represent the Chicago Reader, but you obviously have never read that paper and have no idea what you’re talking about.

Arnold said all he needs to say to you, son. He does not owe you or anyone else an apology.

Please respect the rules here. If you want to complain about a moderator’s actions, do so in the BBQ Pit. If you wish to debate or discuss religion or pornography, do so in Great Debates.

Are you people seriously suggesting that Righteous go to GD? Do you know what they’ll DO to him, there? It’s like you want him dead!

Oh, and, Righteous, you really do have to work on those typing skills. The shift key is a wonderful invention, I think. Also remarkable in their utility are the general skills of proper punctuation, including correct use (and use in general) of the apostrophe.

You don’t need these things, per se, but you’ll engender a lot more respect. Without them you’ll just be laughed at. With them you’ll be laughed at, but they’ll think slightly more of you.

Hey, he’s digging his own hole. I’m just directing him toward the bottom of it.
Truth be told I’m getting a big whiff of troll, but I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt. I’d rather see him sniveling and begging for his life in GD rather then seeing prayer services held in every forum for us unenlighten heathens.

Hey now, let’s not lie. At least SOME of the moderators got free coffee mugs. That’s kinda like being paid.

Righteous, the comment about the mods making you unhappy was a joke!! (although there is some partial truth to it, assuming that having your threads moved/closed makes you unhappy…)

My personal opinion is that God has a sense of humor (see the platapus for reference)… you should try to get one…

You sure your name is “Bruce?”

Somebody who is toughter than I please go to the “PIT” and ask Lynn if “Vinny” is booked?

:::::::leaving for fear of even hearing about the “PIT” again…

Righteous, my man, the Internet is not the only place where pornography exists. Perhaps the people who don’t like it, should not read it, neither on the Internet nor elsewhere. Please do not say “But what about children who find pornography on the Internet.” Children should not be on the Internet without supervision unless their parents (a) have blocking software that only allows access to approved sites (not software that blocks designated sites, because it’ll miss something) or (b) can trust their children not to go to questionable sites.

btw, I’m probably not the only one who would like to see a quote proving Arnold said “Pornography on the Internet is good.”

btw #2, if you think the columns and discussions about human genitals are pornography, do you object to medical sites also?

Mr. Righteous…

I’ll try again, this time being a bit less incredulous.

If you’re the genuine article (E-mail me if you wish for me to explain that more), then I realize that you only have the best of intentions. However, given the nature of your posts, I feel I should offer you a piece of advice.

Lighten up!

Not every issue is a matter of “Heaven or Hell”. There are some things that should be taken with minimal seriousness, and some things that shouldn’t be considered as massive, world-changing issues.

As near as I can tell (I don’t know which version of the Bible you choose to follow, my friend), God doesn’t want people to live in fear. I am rather flattered that you should think so highly of your fellow man to want so much good for them, but to get in such a snit about an article discussing how to repair damage or defects to the human body?

Please do not react to everything as if the very fabric of human existence depended on it. If you’re getting so stressed over such (relatively) little things, then I fear for your health. Certainly God wants his people to live a healthy life, yes?

Heh. Heh. Heh.

Your wish is my command, sweetie! Here’s what Arnold actually said in righteous’s article on male body part Comments thread:

And for those of you who are still interested (and awake  ), here’s a link to the other locked thread under discussion in the OP here: an answer to chronos

What part of that says “Internet pornography is good”? Arnold made 3 points in that quote: 1) Discussion of surgical procedures is not porn, 2) There’s not so much porn on the internet as you seem to think and 3) Parents should supervise their children’s internet experience.

Please show the exact sentence(s) that say “Internet pornography is good.”

And by the way, honeybunches, my name is not sweetie.

Okay, I gotta say “Sorry” for being snippy, DDG. I’m just cranky today.

mr. batty if you refer to the second post in this thread by someone called porcupine and the other thread by someone called guinastasia you will see that they were clearly intending their funny faces (aka smilies) as mockery. i learned how to do smilies too from a link above, so to those people i say :stuck_out_tongue:

medical sites are ok as long as they are restricted to doctors. i wouldn’t want to go to a site and learn details about someone’s private medical problems or see pictures of people being cut apart. and I don’t think any normal person wants to see that either. the article that i read at the straight dope site wasn’t really about a medical problem either, it was about how to make your organ bigger for (presumably) “better” sex. children don’t need to read about that, there is enough obsession about sex already in the media. let them grow up normally!

and not every parent can spend every minute of their spare time watching their child.

also i see someone asked me why i don’t use capital letters. this may sound a little silly but i do appreciate good spelling and grammar, unfortunately i spilled something on my keyboard the other day and so my shift key keeps on getting stuck so i’m trying to avoid using it until i have time to clean the keyboard without breaking anything. in the meantime i don’t use the shift keys except for the important words.

as far as the apostrophes i’ll be more careful, sometimes i’m a little careless with those when i try to type fast because my apostrophe key is also acting funny since the keyboard accident mentioned above.

i see several people defending the moderator mr. winkelried here. i’m sure he spends a lot of time here (i see he has a lot of posts) but when i tried to look at his posts i really don’t see anything very helpful. it’s either “post a link” (he seems to like to say that over and over in exactly the same words) or else make fun of people. i don’t see what he’s contributing that is that special. i thought the object of the board was to answer tough questions or participate in intelligent discussion and i don’t see him doing that.

So… I, not being a doctor, should not be able to go on the web and look up information about various medical problems? Learn about disease? Are you proposing to keep the masses ignorant?

And isn’t being obsessed with sex for awhile part of a normal development? Perhaps not obsessed with, but at least curious about?

The “post a link” part is him doing his job. It’s only reasonable for the mods to have a blanket message for the “please post a link to the column” rule that helps discussion. Arnold has, at this point, 4711 posts. Have you read them all? Have you read even a small fraction? I suggest that if you have a complaint about him that you take it to the pit. Also, in terms of answering tough questions and participate in intelligent discussion… where have you done that?

Sorry, Kat, I thought all I’d have to do was post Arnold’s quote in full and it would be immediately obvious that what he actually said was NOT “Internet pornography is good”.

That was my point: that Arnold said practically everything in his post BUT “Internet pornography is good”.

As near as I can tell, Bruce must have construed this–“But there are many useful sites in this connected world of ours”–to be a rationalization along the lines of, “All Internet sites, including porn sites, are good”.

And (wedging myself with difficulty behind the steering wheel of his compact mind) I think he may have interpreted this–“As far as children are concerned, it is true that I have seen sites that I would not like to have any children of mine (supposing I had any) to visit. But that’s what parental guidance is for…”–to mean, “It should be the parents’ responsibility to make sure their kids aren’t looking at porn sites, so it’s okay for the sites to be there”.

I think that ANY response on Arnold’s part short of a flat-out fire and brimstone “heck, yes, porn sites are EVIL” would have been interpreted as saying that “Internet pornography is good.” With some people, there’s no gray area, and if you don’t join in THEIR shouting, they automatically assume you’re on the other side. Arnold should have said, “Yes indeedy, you’re absolutely right, Cecil is a smut-monger and should have been shut down years ago.” But he didn’t, so he is automatically suspect.

Truly sorry you’re feeling cranky today. :frowning: It makes me want to give you ice cream. Would that help? Steak dinner at Maverick? Lobster somewhere? Chocolate?

I bet they’re scared for life;)

A few months ago one member of the SDMB who is very much not medically inclined was scheduled to undergo a medical procedure about which she exhibited a great deal of apprehension. I went to a search engine, typed in a few words and in less than a minute had several websites that detailed the procedure so I could explain it to her. I am not a doctor; she isn’t either.

When one is considering a medical procedure such as surgery, why not try to educate that person on the procedure? A few weeks ago my father had back surgery to correct a disc that had gone awry; I could, if I had so chosen, gone online, typed in the words of that surgery, and gotten a fairly concise and complete description of that surgery, what’s involved, rehab times, and so on. What is the danger of that?

And furthermore, how would you suggest they grow up normally if they’re not told some things early on? One of the biggest reasons I have no qualms about looking at medical sites and such is that I was introduced to them early on. I don’t scream when I see surgery and more than I do at the sight of my own blood. I wouldn’t say that makes me unnormal so much as it makes me educated.

You’re free to avoid such medical sites; we can’t make you look at them any more than you can make people take them down. But what you’re doing is suggesting censorship, if I’m understanding you corerctly. On a website that’s dedicated to eradicating ignorance, I daresay you’ll meet a fair bit of opposition in that crusade.

“and not every parent can spend every minute of their spare time watching their child.”

And not every child can walk to the public library and get online. Not every child can even get online.

“also i see someone asked me why i don’t use capital letters. this may sound a little silly but i do appreciate good spelling and grammar, unfortunately i spilled something on my keyboard the other day and so my shift key keeps on getting stuck so i’m trying to avoid using it until i have time to clean the keyboard without breaking anything.”

You may appreciate it; do you know how to use it?

Furthermore, unless you have a unique keyboard, I believe you’ll find a key called “caps Lock” right above your Shift key and below the Tab key. Use it accordingly:).

" . . . when i tried to look at his [Arnold’s] posts i really don’t see anything very helpful. it’s either “post a link” (he seems to like to say that over and over in exactly the same words) or else make fun of people."

It’s part of his job to get people to post links, if I’m not mistaken. That’s part of what he does. Got a problem with that? Email him or one of the admins or take it to the pit . . . those are my best guesses for your options.

As for making fun of people, I think you may be over-reacting a wee bit here because your thread got locked. In another forum it would certainly have sparked a debate, if not several other threads (one has already been opened). Subtle humor breaks the ice here . . .

“i don’t see what he’s contributing that is that special. i thought the object of the board was to answer tough questions or participate in intelligent discussion and i don’t see him doing that.”

Not in his forum. If you want to try to participate in intelligent discussion go to GD or GQ. Comments on Cecil’s Columns is not the place for that.

I’d strongly suggest, Righteous, that you go to GD (Great Debates) and post your theories about censorship and internet sites there. I’m sure the folks who hang out there will be glad to debate with you so long as you follow the rules and don’t get snippy (fair warning; don’t try insulting in GD. It will get to banned rather quickly).

Preview is my friend. Preview is my friend. Preview if my friend.

If one of the mods would be kind enough to fix the vBB code foul-up I made, I’d be greateful. I typed [/b when I meant **. Also misspelled scarred, but that’s another matter . . . :frowning:

I know how it goes. I think we all know what the something was that you spilled and exactly what it was you were looking for when you “accidentally” stumbled on Cecil’s penile lengthening column.

I’m kinda loopy on painkillers, so I sat staring at the quote for several minutes thinking, “I must be missing it.” I thought maybe you had actually found something where Arnold actually said (either sarcastically or as a joke) that Internet pronography was good, or else where he had said something that could be easily (i.e by a person with several IQ points) misinterpreted to mean that, and that I just couldn’t find that part.

Yes, Yes, No, Yes. Toss in a couple of Tylenol #3 if you can? Thanks, DDG. And you can call me sweetie if you want. Anyone else has to ask for permission first. People I snap at and cute men get priority.
