I would like to see RSSchen/MizGrand banned from this message board

Nice dodge. Wanna try actually answering the question?

In what way did you overreact, with reference to the OP: she should or shouldn’t be banned now?

Yes?

Oh. Damn. :stuck_out_tongue:

Since I’m here anyway: I think a community is any group of people who provide emotional and practical support for one another. Ergo, that’s us, especially in this particular headache inducing instance. She came to us, as a community of people, for advice - she was bloody well resistant at TAKING that advice, but in the end I do think we made a start.

I’m just saying that I don’t agree with featherlou’s definition of what a message-board community is. I do not think we have a duty to divulge our identities or share every aspect of our personal lives. I do not see a message board as the equivalent of a church, school, or workplace. I don’t think we should be required to divulge details about our past if we don’t want to, any more than one would on a call-in radio show. It’s not the word itself I disagree with, but the idea that we have some sort of duty to be as transparent as we would in real life.

I personally don’t like her actions in real life or on these boards, but I acknowledge that there are no grounds for banning. I have asked Giraffe to change the title to reflect that.

I don’t, but that is just my opinion.

Sorry, but the space-time continuum must be protected.

Also, would you like to take a moment and register me?

[sub]I’ve apparently decided to speak in nothing but Futurama references for the rest of this thread.[/sub]

I think I see what you’re saying, but after you have dumped your dirty laundry out for everyone to see, and have shown what type of person you are in doing so, I don’t think it’s fair ball to cry “Do Over!” and ask to not have your dirty laundry that YOU FREELY CHOSE TO DISCLOSE follow you around.

Do we have a duty to not lie here, any more than we would in real life? That I don’t know. I personally don’t like lying, and I can’t be bothered to try to remember different stories for different people, but as I said in my earlier post, I’m not sure how one member being a known liar affects other posters.

Nobody is obligated to disclose anything about themselves here; we are actively discouraged NOT to, ask a matter of fact.

Exactly.

I feel pretty secure with my friends here at SDMB to finally reveal that I am D.B. Cooper.

You guys won’t tell anyone, will ya?

{Shaking fist at sky, Kirk-style}
Darn the space-time continuum!
{/SFASKS}
Okay then.

I did already - didn’t you notice it?

Can we just ban the holier than thou assholes who decide that merely disagreeing with someone isn’t enough but that they have to start umpteen million threads in which to express their moral outrage and try to toss out someone they don’t like?

They may not be trolls in the traditional sense, but thy are… trolling with our moral code, yeah, that’s it.

Next up: banning people who are trolling with our vision, trolling with our senses of humor, and trolling with our collective unholy fascination with The Princess Bride.

Every time someone says that the US is full of self-righteous hypocritically moralistic pricks who want to have a witch burning at every opportunity, I say that there are some places where those kind of idiots don’t congregate. Apparently this board is no longer one of them.

Look guys, I was one of those who slapped **RSSchen/MizGrand ** upside the head, both in MPSIMS and in the Pit, but it’s quite possible the implied threat that 1)Dopers could figure out who she was IRL and 2)They would use that information to contact her husband might have scared some sense into her.

Certainly she apologized in MPSIMS and is promising to think long and hard before she goes further and is going to seek help. I think we should just let it go. We all got a little hotheaded, but it’s time to move on.

She does that sh!t to me all the time. I think I should save my $15 and just let her post everything I’m thinking.

No-one ever even suggested that members are under an obligation to reveal everything about themselves. But, to the extent that this board is a community of sorts, it can only work if we don’t spend our time fabricating stories and lying to one another, or changing our stories to make ourselves look more deserving of sympathy to other members.

I’ve always said that we should, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, assume that people are telling the truth. That’s really a necessary aspect of interaction in a largely anonymous medium like this. But once evidence emerges that someone is bullshitting, then i think other members have a right to treat their future contributions with skepticism.

As i said, i don’t think the person in question should be banned, but i won’t be taking any of her posts very seriously from here on.

I’m a little confused here. Do you feel a need to be completely transparent about every aspect of your life at your job, school, and church? Or with your neighbors? There are things I have revealed on this board that I wouldn’t dream of saying to my coworkers.

The OP admits to overreacting, can’t we just focus on the magical pony poop and whip out some cute cat pictures and then go home?

Okay, most of us are probably already in our homes … well, you know what I mean … could we at least go back to just mocking the guests who think we’re intolerant?
[sub]grumbleEveryone probably has me on ignore anyway.[/sub]

O.K., fair enough.

I agree with that last sentence, but I don’t agree that members ought to have some sort of “standing” as to how moral they are in their personal lives. If you are judging yourself or others by the kind of reaction they’re getting on a message board, a serious reality-check is in order. These aren’t your friends and neighbors, they’re anonymous people posting on the internet.

(not looking at the thread, just its location) Well, jeeze, that’s the problem right there! C’mon, I never heard of this person because ONLY MORONS POST IN MPSIMS! Somebody jerked you around? So fucking what? It’s MPSIMS, fechrissakes! You should EXPECT that shit because–what was that rule of thumb again?–ONLY MORONS POST IN MPSIMS!

That’s kinda scary.
