I don’t completely agree with that. To a large degree, what you do in your private life (and how many ladles you stick up your bum) is your business, but there are some things you can do in your private life that will be greeted with universal (justified) hatred (child abuse comes to mind as a good example of that).
Actually, they are my friends and neighbours. I have met people from the Dope in two countries that I consider friends, and some of them don’t live too far away from me.

(not looking at the thread, just its location) Well, jeeze, that’s the problem right there! C’mon, I never heard of this person because ONLY MORONS POST IN MPSIMS! Somebody jerked you around? So fucking what? It’s MPSIMS, fechrissakes! You should EXPECT that shit because–what was that rule of thumb again?–ONLY MORONS POST IN MPSIMS!

I (now) believe I speak for all of us when I say: hey!
**dropzone **needs huggles! C’mon, all you MPSIMSers! Huggles for dropzone! Where are the kitty pics? Does someone have the virtual cookies and milk? It’s okay, dropzone, we luuuuurve you!

No, no, you misunderstand. I’m not saying we shouldn’t speak our minds; I’m saying that trying to keep tabs on everyone as to their moral character, as one might do in real life with his friends and neighbors, is rather unrealistic on an anonymous message board. I would assume nothing about anyone here. I will react to their posts, but I’m not going to make any assumptions about who they are IRL.
If you hook up with someone IRL, then they become your friend. The people on a message board aren’t your friends just because you read each other’s posts.

O.K., fair enough.
I agree with that last sentence, but I don’t agree that members ought to have some sort of “standing” as to how moral they are in their personal lives. If you are judging yourself or others by the kind of reaction they’re getting on a message board, a serious reality-check is in order. These aren’t your friends and neighbors, they’re anonymous people posting on the internet.
That’s not entirely true. If you know my history you know what I’m talking about.
Nevertheless, I agree that some people take this stuff way too seriously. One of them used to be me. Now, for the most part, I find myself fairly dispassionate. I enjoy the give and take for the most part, and when I do get together with my friends/acquaintances they are good company, but the belief that people who misrepresent themselves should be banned is ludicrous.
The person in question here has effectively banned herself by destroying whatever credibility she had. In a place where the only form of communication is the written word, your word is your reputation. Why ban her? Disgrace is an even harsher punishment.

Why not? I loan them books, they loan me music, we argue over trivialities like baseball, and my world would be diminished if they were gone. Sounds like friends to me.
Well, I don’t actually think she should be banned, although I understand where featherlou is coming from.
This whole deal feels a bit like that fiasco back when I first signed up (and dinosaurs still walked the earth) where some woman (whose user name I don’t remember) kept starting threads about her dying son. Or dying cousin. Or dying aunt. Or some relative dying. And in fact posted from the hospital room as the person died. Riiiiight.
It’s creepy and manipulative and it does indeed feel like we’re being trolled.
But I don’t about banning. Shunning, on the other hand, I could get behind. I’m always in the mood for a good shun.

Well, I’m not going to argue with these points (mostly because I largely agree with them. )

I’m not sure why this whole thing struck me so hard - I usually have no problem not taking any of this stuff too personally or too seriously; that’s something that I’ll have to think about.
Let me, at this very late time and place, add my Two Jesus H. Christ What The Fuck Cents.
I may be the only person who didn’t follow the whole sordid tale. I actually don’t really care whether she’s getting some or not getting some or what. I have no idea whether she lied or not. I think people’s reactions to infidelity often border on insane.
But by god if I got any sense that some crazy ass more-moral-than-thou motherfuckers were trying to ferret out personal information about me to fuck with my life, you bet I’d do whatever I could to pull up stakes. I’m not sure why she decided to stay around after changing her name, but I don’t really care.
Crazy ass people - I hope all of your personal shit is entirely ship shape and up to code. I hope you never give into temptation and do something wrong. Unfortunately, according to survey data, the fact is that many, if not most, people are going to engage in infidelity. The world would be a better place if people did not go fucking apeshit about it, thereby endorsing the going of apeshit about it by others. Let people deal with it appropriately, but my goodness gracious, let’s settle down and quit acting like a ritualistic baby disemboweling occurred.

Fuckin’ well-told!
I gave her a lot of shit in the locked thread, but I don’t see any reason for a banning. She changed her name with the approval and assistance of the admins. She hasn’t broken any board rules. And that twelve page thread was pretty entertaining.
I’m not a mod, but if I were I’d close this and all related threads.
May be a reference to LittleTassie / BooBoo’sLilTigress or something like that - I know she went by the name Honesty, too. (How can you forget a troll so ironically named?) The threads have been Disappeared, but the gist is that (among other crimes against Dopery) she claimed her baby was dying in the hospital, and eventually the fauxKid died, resulting in lots of outpourings of sympathy (understandably). She was then outted as someone who’d trolled the Dope before by claiming her boyfriend - also a Doper - was in a terrible accident. Commence wankery and inevitable banning.
Back when I first joined and discovered the Pit, I had a lot of fun reading the archives of trainwrecks such as this one. Now alas the links are gone, but as long as even one of us remembers, they live a life eternal!
