iCarly/Victorious: 2 Nickelodeon shows with something in common.

Both hit Nickelodeon shows were created by Dan Schneider. One thing I’ve noticed are all the men in the shows, with the exception of maybe one, are constantly being pushed around by the female characters.

Freddie gets pushed around by his mother and Sam and never really stands up for himself and always loses. Same with Gibby.
Spencer, although the older brother, is talked down by his younger sister and is always doing what Mrs. Benson tells him, even when she takes over his house.

On “Victorious” Andre gets pushed around by Tori and Jade, Robbie is pushed around, often literally, but Trina and Beck is in a relationship with a very domineering Jade, although he’ll at least stand up for himself sometimes.

It is a bit weird, and not in a good way. Sam frequently beats Freddy up too. But the BF-of-the-week is usually a stronger character, and Neville might be a bastard who eventually loses (deservedly), but he doesn’t exactly get pushed around.

It’s like the ongoing trend in adverts for all men to be total losers and women to be total bitches. These ad and TV show writers aren’t exaggerating or parodying a world anything like the one I live in.

You’re right about whatever boyfriend the girls are dating. The only one I guess they treated not great was the “bad boy” with the beanie baby collection. But even then, Carly just broke up with him, he wasn’t denigrated like the other male characters.

And Neville, although he does fight back against Carly and nearly wins sometimes, he has been beaten up by the girls before.

Zoey 101, another Dan Schneider show, was exactly the same way - Chase & Logan were always being pushed around by the girls. Michael wasn’t pushed around nearly as much, but as the token black student character he really couldn’t be.

The principal (Ted…blanking on last name) in iCarly is a male character who doesn’t get pushed around.

Principal Franklin. Though I always refer to him as “Principal Tuvok”. He doesn’t get pushed around, but Carly & Sam have manipulated him somewhat.

It probably wouldn’t be considered funny to have a girl who is constantly being pushed around by guys.

Kind of off topic (sorry), but I know that Carly’s/Spencer’s dad is like on a submarine…but has their ever been any mention on where their mother is???

As far as I know, they have never explicitly stated what happened to the mom, but the inference, so far, is that she passed away.

I’ve always taken the fact that their father is an Air Force officer stationed on a submarine as meaning “We’re not putting much thought into the backstory, so neither should you.”

Considering the demographic for these shows is primarily tween girls, I think the whole “strong female lead” thing is intentional.

That being said, my family enjoys iCarly, despite not having a tween girl in the house. hehehe

I always just assumed he was a liaison officer.

Your version makes more sense.

I think so too. However, I wish they would turn down Sam’s bad behavior a bit. Carly seems to have a good head on her shoulders, yet she thinks there is nothing wrong with being friends with someone who would steal money out of her purse or suck the cream out of her designer cupcakes or any of the other millions of nasty things she does to someone she calls a friend.

I think she was killed by hunters shortly after helping Bambi get away.

Two things - Sam is very loyal, and will always stand up for Carly. Being friends with the kid everyone in school is afraid of can be useful.

And Carly knows that she’s actually a very good influence on Sam, and keeps her out of much worse trouble. Remember the “It’s A Wonderful Life” episode where it turned out that Sam would be in juvie if she and Carly weren’t friends?
