Iconography of the USA through the years

To paraphrase an interview I heard on NPR the other day–

I don’t know how true that is, but I think we’re better served by Mr. Presley.

Allow me a :dubious: – I would have bough it if the speaker had said that the association with the USA used to be “Rock n’ Roll” and now was “Iraq War”, but the narrow specificity in the quote is rather hyperbolic to ascribe to a general “free association” question.

As I recall, the story was about a National Geographic journalist who was captured near some ill-defined border in Africa. His captors said something along the lines of ‘we will use this technique on you, just like they use in [Guantanomo/Abu Ghraib].’ His point was that even in this remote backwater, they know of U.S. torture techniques, and that people there have that on their minds more than American pop culture.
