I heard it last night on my way home from work, and I’ve heard it hundreds of times, I just don’t the title. It doesn’t have any lyrics, so that might make it hard, but it’s used in movies a lot for cruising music. You know, the one with the funky bass line, the high hat only drums, the organ, with the guitar only playing staccato chords except for the solo.
Green Onions.
I agree that Green Onions is the most likely answer, but they had another top-10 instrumental that gets a still gets a lot of airplay – Time is Tight – which might also be what you’ve heard.
Thanks for the info.
A longshot: Hip Hug Her. And I believe that covers all of Booker and the MG’s hits and semi-hits.
Wha–? I had a much more elegant answer, not sure what happened there…
Well, it isn’t too late yet, Dooku.
High Hat rhythms, staccato guitar, etc. I’m gonna go with Hang 'Em High. Who’s with me?
Quasi
Soul Limbo?
Another vote for Green Onions, just because the OP says it gets used as cruising music. Green Onions is Hollywood shorthand for instant Cool in movies and trailers. But I still like Hip Hug-Her and Melting Pot better.
Well my original answer included some personal stories about why I love that song, not necessarily relevant to the OP. Plus, it took me about half an hour just to post the 2nd time…
But it seems faster today, so here’s a link to a good site with Bios, Discography, plus a link to “The best of you” from Booker T’s 1980 album.
A long time ago I had a lovely mix tape of Booker T and the MGs, Sam and Dave, BarKays, Wilson Pickett, etc. When I got back from College one semester I noticed the label had been written over with “NKOTB” in my cousin’s handwriting. "Mustang Sally…guess you better slooo—HANG TOUGH!!! HANG TOUGH!!!
?? Why didn’t that link work? Looks OK to me… ::shrug::
