sorry, but no picture. i found this dog on my doorstep 2 nights ago, and i found a dog box thing to keep it in while i wait for the owner to call (i put an ad in the paper). i take it out alot, to run around and stuff, food and drink are in the cage. Anyways…
Its still a puppy, but pretty big, about a foot high and 2 feet long. black, mostly, with brown on the legs and white on its undereside. The hair on its back comes to a point, sort of like a shallow mohawk. the hair istelf is no longer than one inch short, and very fine. any help would be appreciated.
I can’t tell from the description but here is a link with pictures of many breeds. Maybe it can help you identify the dog.
Very nice of you to take care of the little pooper until it’s owner comes to find him.
MSU, you might try taking the dog to a vet to see if it is microchipped. They will have a scanner they can run over its back and it will beep if he has one. The microchip will give you an id number, which can be looked up for owner information.
Don’t know if the vet would charge you for this, but it would take them 10 seconds to do and since it is for a stray, I would hope they would. (Perhaps **CrazyCatLady ** can come by and answer this part for me.)
And good for you for taking care of him!
your description of his “shallow mohawk” of hair on his back makes me think Rhodesian Ridgeback:

Lots of people don’t read the paper. Depending on the area you live in, it could easily be that most people do not read the paper.
Take the dog to the pound and put a hold on him. They will scan for a microchip and if the owner never comes forward, you should have first hold. At least that is how it works at my local pound. Call for details before you go down so you know what to expect.
That was my first thought, but I’ve never seen a Rhodie with black (except for a bit around the muzzle), just various shades of a sort of golden brown. Could well be a Rhodie-something cross, though. Nothing says the pup has to be a pure-bred.

I was thinking the samething, that is was a mix because of the black as well, but didn’t want to confuse the issue.
If its stocky as is the impression I’m getting, my wild what the heck guess is Rhody/Rott mix.
probly not a rhodesian ridgeback: their “ridge” isn’t any higher, just runs against the grain. plus they’re very shorthaired, like a greyhound or a chihuahua, which doesn’t fit with the description. probly a mutt with some border collie and some shepherd, or–less likely–some Bernaise.
There are only three extant breeds that have that ridge on the back, the Rhodesian Ridgeback/Zimbabwean Lion Dog and the Indonesian and Thai Ridgebacks which are related to each other but not the Rhodesian ridgebacks.
It could be a mongrel with one of those breeds on it background or it could be an Indonesian ridgeback, which come in a variety of colours.
It’s impossible to do any better without a photograph.
