So I’m minding my own business, listening to a New Wave playlist on Spotify, when “Someone Somewhere (in Summertime)” by Simple Minds starts playing.
Listen.
When I listen to it, I get the distinct feeling that that opening riff is going to launch into some other song, but what???
My first thought was Mr. Mister’s Broken Wings, but that’s not it. (Neither is “Kyrie Eleison”; so much for Mr. Mister’s hits).
Am I nuts [del]and[/del] or is there another 1980s song that has a very similar intro to that Simple Minds song? (Maybe another one of their songs? I confess my knowledge of Simple Minds’ back catalog is not exhaustive. :p)
Possibly the keyboard part (that starts when the title is sung) from Alive and Kicking?
It kind of sounds like Flock of Seagulls (see both “Space Age Love Song” and “I Ran”, but then again, so do a lot of other New Wave songs from that period.
How about a more recent song that sampled it?
If you’re sure it’s in the intro, maybe one of It’s My Life by Talk Talk, or Lovesong by the Cure (doesn’t really fit except the guitar part resembles it a bit).
Perhaps it may be Rio, by Duran Duran?
It has a sort of Bryan Ferry-ish feel to it, I think.
Thanks for all your replies! It turns out…it was “Broken Wings”, just not the intro. :o Sorry for making you think of New Wave music for no reason (unless you love it like I do, in which case, this was a gift. :))
Compare: Someone Somewhere intro and Broken Wings outro. Different melody, same notes and key.
What’s odd is when I opened this thread I decided to go and eat something and then read it and see what it’s all about, and then see if I can ID the OP’s song. While eating for some strange reason “Broken Wings” came to my mind without thinking about this thread.
Lo and behold the Mr.Mister song turns out to be the source of this thread.
I believe Carl Jung and the Police would call that…synchronicity.
sounds like the beginning of this a bit.
