ID this obscure rock song?

The other day I caught the last half of an instrumental(?) on a classic rock station.

An extended play, deep album cut; the part I caught was several minutes long.

Violins and an acoustic guitar.

Probably The Moody Blues, possibly Electric Light Orchestra.

Ring any bells?

“Daybreaker” is an instrumental by ELO.

Fast? Slow? Percussion involved?

Did you check the radio station’s website, Enola? Many post their playlists online now.

Slower than Daybreaker, and no percussion.

I’m guessing not the Moody Blues. They didn’t do a lot of long instrumental sequences in their recordings, and even back when I was a major Moodies fan, the only one I’d have considered memorable enough to play even as a ‘deep track’ sort of thing would have been “Beyond” off the To Our Children’s Children’s Children album. And it isn’t anything like your description.

Hmmm… we did a lot of discussing ELO lately, what with their induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

Before we get started, though, are you sure it’s not the ending of “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos?

As to ELO, could it be “First Movement (Jumping Biz)” from their first album (No Answer here in the US)?

Wait… absolutely no percussion? And that’s a cello, not a violin. Darn. Maybe it’s not ELO after all…

Going way out on a limb here - “I Scare Myself” by Dan Hicks?

Limb #2: possibly “White Bird” by It’s A Beautiful Day?

If it was on a classic rock station it can’t be that obscure.

You really haven’t got a single other clue than that? It sounds like it could be almost anything.

Yeah…can you hum it for us?

“Da da him”-Al Bundy

Fire on High by ELO?

Friends” by Led Zeppelin?

Even I doubt it, but ya never know.

Since this was a classic rock station, all the OP has to do is keep listening for a couple of days and he’s bound to hear it several more times (with identification by the DJ).

Was it *Rio *by Duran Duran?

(sorry, couldn’t help myself!)

Occasionally classic rock stations have some periods where they play deeper cuts and stuff, like Sunday afternoons or something.

But you can bet it’s a well-known band like the Moodies, or ELO, or something like that.

It’s not about to be some unknown entity, although frankly I’m struggling with acoustic guitar and violins with no percussion. I can think of horns, and organ, and electric guitar and a whole bunch of stuff together, but violins and acoustic guitar on classical rock confounds me.

I’m no musician, but experimenting on a online piano leads me to believe the melody is:

GFECDEA
FEDBCDG
EDCABCE

That make any sense to ya?

Maybe The Water Song by Hot Tuna?

With percussion … without violins … don’t quite fit …
