ID this sf-ish baseball story

I think I’ve asked this question five or six times over the years, a couple of times in here. Maybe this is the lucky toss of the dice.

It’s a short story, maybe short-short, and I am pretty sure the title is something like “Last Day of the Season.” It’s the critical game of the division series or the World Series, winner take all. It might involve perennial underdog teams - Cubs vs. Red Sox before the latter overcame their slump? Or maybe fictional teams.

Interwoven with the game narrative is a saber-rattling tale of how WWIII is on the verge of boiling over.

In the final paragraph, a player hits a tremendous home run sure to win the game. The crowd follows its arc up and up… and are thus staring right into the first bomb as it goes off.

Any clues?

Sounds just like an episode of Twilight Zone. Have you Googled the list?

The Last Pennant Before Armageddon by W.P. Kinsella.

Bingo. Not quite the way I remembered it, but that’s how it goes.

I can check that one off the list, thanks.

I’m glad I didn’t post my original response. I thought this was a joke!
