The Cubs won the Series. Does this mean the World is Going to End?

In one of A. Whitney Brown’s segments on SNL’s Weekend Update, back in the Pleistocene Era, he said something about the Cubs Winning the Pennant being a harbinger of the End Times.

“Yes,” he said, “It’s written that when the Small Bears from the Windy Place capture the Small Flag, you will know that the End is nigh.”

Brown was eerily right about a number of things. Should I be making my final preparations?

The End may be starting…but how long is it going to take? If it takes a good long time, it may not even be noticeable.

It is the end…OF HIGH PRICES! Shop at the new Heavenly Hills Mall!

The sure sign of the End could come on Tuesday…

*"Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around?
When the snow melts away, do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground?

“When I was a boy, they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave, the land of the free
And the doormat of the National League”*

Brings a tear to my eye, it does.

It did end, the world as we know it ended.

Now we have a new one!

(It happens all the time.)

Enjoy!

It may lead to dogs and cats living together.

And it is further written…

“…and yea, the nighness shall increase into destruction when the orange ass rules all, and that all will be waste and oblivion.”

Tom Ricketts might have two reasons to celebrate.

The end may be near, but it will take 108 years.

This was truly beautiful – thanks. Would make a nice entry on my Zen page-a-day calendar.

Before 2004, I used to speculate about the Red Sox meeting the Cubs in the World Series. Obviously, the universe could not possibly allow either team to win, so there would be some sort of spectacular, possibly world-ending, catastrophe. Having the Sox win three times since then has sort of spoiled that line of thinking.

Nonetheless, I was mildly rooting for the Cubs this time around, mostly because it has been 108 years. The Sox didn’t survive the division series, so why not? My wife, a lifelong Sox fan, was mildly rooting for Cleveland, mostly because of Terry Francona (former Sox manager). I’m happy the Cubs won, but a little saddened that Cleveland lost on her behalf.

Life in the Post-Cubs-Winning world isn’t so bad. In fact, I note there’s a bowl of candy on my desk. If that’s not an encouraging sign, I don’t know what is.

That would depend on the candy.
A mix of NECCO wafers, Circus Peanuts and candy corn is not encouraging.

CUBS WIN - CUBS WIN - CUBS WIN

As a side note, hell has frozen over.

As opposed to what actually happened this year, when the game was called due to rain at the end of the 9th and the Series was declared a tie?

Trump will win.
The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away.

"There is a theory which states that if ever [del]anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here[/del]the Cubs win The World Series, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened." - The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy

Already happening. What’s next, the Leafs winning The Cup?

According to the short story “The Last Pennant before Armageddon” by W. P. Kinsella (who is most famous for writing Shoeless Joe), the Cubs winning the National League Pennant brings about the end of the world. Since that has already happened and we are still here, I think all is OK.

It’s a great story, if you ever get a chance to read it. It’s in the collection The Thrill of the Grass. He was one of my favorite authors (sadly he passed away just a few weeks ago).

Article from WBUR about the story
