Can anyone recomend a good id3 tag editor? The one that comes with winamp is pretty tedious to use if you want to change things accross a bunch of files
I use url=http://www.musicmatch.com/]MusicMatch Jukebox. The tag editor will let you select any number of songs.
For example, if you encode a whole album by, say, Tool, with no tags other than song titles, you can select the whole album, change the artist name to Tool, and then apply it to all tracks with one click. Ditto with any other field. You can then rename the track files to reflect the changes you made, again, with just one click.
It will even rename the folder the files are in, if necessary, and it will then update it’s own database so it can still find the files.
Go here for Tag & Rename. It’s great for batch tagging. It will also rename files based on your tags.
As a bonus, for batch renaming of files, go here for Rename Wiz. You can add prefixes & suffixes, change the extension, increment by number, and find & replace. It also has a preview feature so you can try your changes before you apply them.
I use both of these to manage my mp3’s and they’re great applications.
The media library in Winamp 5 is very easy to use for batch updates. Just highlight the items you want to edit, right-click and select “Edit selected items”. Check the fields you want to change, change them, and hit OK. Make sure that “Update tags” is selected.
A strong second for T&R.
I must be missing something. It seems to me that it is really hard to select from among the 4500 songs if the tags are wrong. I would like to select the files in one directory.
I looked at tag and rename and it does look pretty good. Thanks guys. I would still like other opinions if people have them.
try musicbrainz i dont remember the url though
I’ve never found a better ID3 tag editor than Tag & Rename. I highly recommend it also.

Another vote for Tag&Rename. It kicks some serious… well, mp3’s don’t have asses.
Sure they do. They just have small compressed asses.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have being using tag and rename this weekend. Also thanks to Ultrafilter for how to use winamp.
I recently got the roku M1000 Mp3 player for my stereo. I needed to clean up the tags for easy browsing.

If you are in the market for that sort of thing this one works pretty well and it looks good in the living room.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have being using tag and rename this weekend. Also thanks to Ultrafilter for how to use winamp. It made renaming the greatest hits albums easy. I had about 20 greatest hits discs and when browsing in the living room by album there was not a good way to see who’s greatest hits they were. Tag and rename worked well for fixing the tags on a per directory basis.
Posting to tag this thread for later retrieval.
