Ideas for Time Capsule for 1-year-old.

My great nephew’s 1st birthday is being celebrated soon, and I have to do something to put into his Time Capsule. This will be the third Time Capsule in the same family and I am running out of ideas.

For his oldest brother, I did “What do things cost when you were born?” and I went around and took pictures of this and that, with prices. A pound of bananas, a bag of milk (we’ve already done the “milk in bags” thread), mortgage rates, three-bedroom house, etc, etc, etc… and we got him a hockey card, for lack of a better idea. All of this went into a photo album.

For his next brother, I did “What was number one when you were born (and when you were 1)?” and I did the top 10 highest grossing movies that week, top TV shows, top albums on the date, etc, and we got him CDs of the #1 albums on the day he was born and on his first birthday (hopefully someone will have a dusty old CD player he can use is another 15 or so years). Also this all fit into a photo album.

I have an idea for this boy, but maybe you have a better one… I’m thinking of showing some fads (kids only? I don’t know…) from the past year or two, so that he can see them when he’s older. For example Silly Bandz were a big deal last year, and I’m sure we have an unopened pack around here from one of my kids, so that could go in. But what else?

If you have a different idea, I’d like to hear that, too…

I see the rest of you have no ideas, either. Good. I don’t feel quite so old and out of touch with fads… :0)

I got one… maybe.

One of the things I’ve been struck by over the years is how much the cities I’ve lived in have changed since I was born. I look at old photos and I hardly recognize these places. Perhaps you could make a photo album of local landmarks and notable areas in town. Think about it. What about your town looks different than it did twenty years ago? What will look different twenty years from now?

That’s a great one, but someone did it for one of the other time capsules and that’s only a couple of years ago.

It’s getting hard to come up with new ideas!

Maybe screen shot prints of the top 25 most visited web sites of the time

That’s a good one. I know that I’ve been sent to look at the Space Jam web site from 1996(?), which is still up, and that’s kind of cool to compare with today’s…
