This has been bothering me for a while. There are two animals of the same type (I believe crows sitting on a power line, but I wouldn’t swear to it). #1: What do you want to do? #2: I don’t know; what do you want to do? #1: Now, don’t start that again. What do YOU want to do?
This conversation continues in this unproductive manner for a while. I’m fairly sure the two animals (crows?) have cockney accents.
Does anyone know what I’m talking about? It might be an old MGM cartoon, something I saw on a Sunday morning as a kid.
I believe it has its roots in “Marty” - the Ernie Borgnine movie…I distinctly remember Marty having this conversation with more than one person in the film (or perhaps the cartoon inspired “Marty” - was Paddy Chaefsky a cartoon-o-phile?
The Jungle Book? Really? I haven’t seen it since I was about 5; no wonder I couldn’t place the scene. A friend and I have been doing the bit back and forth for years. We probably saw it together and have been doing it ever since. All I remember from that movie is “The Bear/Bare Necessities” song. (And this, apparently.)
Veuve_ClicquotNJ is correct about the origins of the gag being from Marty; the references to the Beatle-like barbershop-quartet-singing vultures in Disney’s The Jungle book are also correct.
