Identify this Jamaican snack please!

I had a neighbor and coworker who was from Jamaica. He found a Jamaican store that sold these snacks he used to love and introduced them to me. Well he moved away sometime ago, and I just decided I’d like to buy some but can’t remember what they’re called. It was like a pastry with a meaty saucy filling. Anyone know what they’re called?

Sounds like meat pies, or “patties”. Did they look anything like this?

They’re just called Jamaican Meat Patties (google that).

Yep Jamaican Meat Patties. mmmmmm.

Pretty easy to find in the NY/NJ area, I used to eat them all the time. I haven’t been able to find any (not even the frozen kind) in the Bay Area. So if you find them, be sure to share where!

Funny thing…I saw the thread title, thought to myself ‘I betcha he’s talking about Jamaican patties’, then decided that was too easy, and opened the thread to look…sure enough…

Now I want a patty… Been sooooo long since I had one.

They also have Jamaican vegetable patties! The filling is cabbage and carrots, in my experience.

When I was in Kingston, Jamaica there was a stand where they sold meat patties and “coco bread”. The coco bread was a white bun that I think was steamed. It was a little bit hollow in the middle and you could open it up and stuff a pattie in there and eat it like a snadwhich. I have never seen these anywhere else. Anyone know what I am talking about?

I love patties too. I don’t know of any Jamaican restaurants around Orlando, but I usually see them in the frozen food case at the supermarket. I like the spicy ones best, but they’re damn good in any variety.

They occassionally sell these at the Dekalb Farmer’s Market restuarant. I’ll have to try one sometime.

When in Jamaica years back, I really loved Ackee patties, it’s a vegetable, but tastes like scrambled eggs—very impossible to get, I think, because they are indigestible until ripe, and don’t ship well. but, Man, Mon, they are sooo good. If anyone knows where to get Ackee, let me know!

Stuffy
here’s one recipe for patties, but, mon, I bet it takes a real Jamaican cook to do it right. If you have the ability, do go down to Jamaica, it’s an amazing, beautiful soul of a place. I loved it, absolutely.

Our local supermarkets have canned ackees in their small Jamaican food sections – a couple different brands. I’ve never tried them, so I’m not sure how the canned ones would measure up to the authentic ones you had. E-mail me if you’d like me to pick some up for you!

That’s them, I could have sworn they had a “name” though. The reason I asked was because my wife asked me to pick up some this weekend and neither of us remembered what they were called.

psycat90 I know just the place, but you’ll have to come to Oakland. Go downtown just where Telegraph splits from Broadway stop and park your car. Make sure you’re on the same side of the street as the old Fox theater (you’ll see the marquee) start walking towards the Fox. About two doors down from the corner of 16th street is a Jamaican restaurant, you’ll have pay attention it’s really tiny, they also sell these frozen.

I plan to make that happen this year or next elelle. I’ve spent the last three years gettting my business off the ground, the wife has promised to kill me if we don’t have a vacation soon.
