Identify Western Film--Hero Stresses That People Must Die Quietly

Title says most of it. I believe it may have involved Native Americans (as villains, probably!). Someone of the group is killed and cries out in either pain/anguish. Hero stresses to the others that you must not do that and later he (I think it was the hero) is killed (stabbed and thrown off a cliff, iirc) and falls silently to his death.

Saw it as a kid or teen, so mid-late 70s or before.

No, that film is from 2001. Way too recent. Mine would be at least before 1980. Probably the 70s or 60s.
