Hey y’all, trying to free my dad from the debbil AOL. He’s using Widows 98 and is used to IE so I’m trying to get him IE that’s not embedded in AOL so we can get the debbil AOL off his machine for good. What version of IE should he be using and where can I get it?

Which version depends on which Operating System is on the machine. Guidelines are posted.
But why not try something safer and better: Like Firefox!
Had to say it.
Another vote for using Firefox - built-in pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, and fewer security problems.
OK, well, he’s not going to change browsers so suggestions of other browsers are not necessary, but thanks.
I looked at the page Myglaren linked already and maybe I’m missing something obvious but I’m not seeing anything that says “download IE for use with Win98” on that page.
If anyone can post a specific link to a specific page where I can download the specific version of IE for Win98 that would be super, because I’m not finding it.
Have you tried Windows Update? That will install IE 6.0. Just open the start menu (Start Button) and there should be a link to Windows Update at the top of the Start Menu. Click the link and download all the Critical Updates.
IE6
It is under ‘Downploads’ on the page linked to earlier.
Or, the page with the download button. All versions post-98 supported.
I really doubt that Firefox will work well with Windows 98 (check out that aliteration!)
It’s been awhile since third parties developed for that OS, and even Microsoft official retired it (read: quit supporting/updating it) almost two years ago.
My advice: Get your dad a new computer (faster and more reliable equals less frustrating.) Tax returns are coming soon and you should be able to get him a decent (though basic) machine for $300-$400, especially if he already has a monitor. I would suggest building one, but the most expensive component would likely be the OS, which is your issue to begin with :).
Not so; they got so much flack when they announced that, they retracted it and decided to continue support, including security updates until 2006, and online user support until 2007:
I be cornfussed… What has AOHell to do with Win 98 or IE???
AOHell has a browser but is not IE, IE is a seperste one.
IE does not come in AOHell, it comes in Windoz … You just need an broadband or dial-up connection to use it. If he is used to IE, he has it on the computer and you can throw AOHell away without hurting IE…
If AOHell is his ISP on dial-up, then you will have to get another ISP, locally or Netzero-yahoo-or somethnig to connect with.
Or, are you building a diff. puter and ??? If yiou have a 98 disk, you got IE.
Splain me …
Firefox works pefectly well on both of my relative’s machines that have Windows 98 on them; it works for another relative who is running Windows ME  on his computer, with no more problems than ME usually has.
You can at least try Firefox. It is about 5 Mb to download and it imports your IE bookmarks…
Oh dear. I hope this knowledge doesn’t make my install of Firefox on Windows 98 stop working. You know how the cartoon characters run off the cliff, but don’t fall until they realize they’re in the air? Perhaps software installs follow the same principles.
I’d still recommend installing Firefox, showing him a bit, and explaining that it would offer a great deal of protection from spyware and viruses. Don’t pressure him, but it also won’t take a ton of hard drive space, so if he never uses it, no worries.
OP was asking where to obtain a download of the up-to date Internet Explorer. Version on the 98 discs are not current.
My posts have all been made using Firefox on Windows 98 - two machines. Works fine - better than IE anyway.
I am really cornfused now… I read this as he wants AOHell gone but wants to keep the IE his dad is used to and appears to think that AOHell and IE are connected… He might be running IE-6 now for all we know. Has he beem getting updates? ( I donno from his OP )
Until I see more info from him on what is going on, well, ::: shrug ::: I got no dog in this hunt anyway, I use 98se and AOHell and IE and Irefox and Opra and what ever works best on whichever site.
If AOHell is his ISP, he will have to get another if he dumps AOHell, no matter what browser he is using. Heck, I might be wrong, you guys are all so much better informed and all … *:: sheesh :: * Sounds to me like his dad is ready to go broadband … and we need to get him onto a P-4 with 550 FSB and a 10K RPM 160 GIG HD with… Ya think?
*::: wanders off shaking head ::: *
He can still use AOL as his ISP to connect then use any browser he wishes.
I connect with BY Yahoo but refuse to use their browser, a corrupted veersion of IE, and use Firefox or Netscape.
